Just as an example, where's a good place to get plates? Or the Olympic plates at the same price as standard?

I got a lot of my plates from Fitness Superstore. As an example, there your can get 20kg tri grip plates over five pounds cheaper than solid standard plates:

http://www.fitness-superstore.co.uk/olympic_weight_plates/bodypower_trigrip_cast_iron_olympic_disc__20kg_x1/11783_p.html

http://www.fitness-superstore.co.uk/standard_weight_plates/bodypower_cast_iron_standard_disc_20kg_x1/10877_p.html

Because working the entire body strengthens it all rather than working different areas out of proportion to others? Or another reason?

In the most simplest of terms it is more effective, whether that be for muscle, strength and/or fat loss, for the majority of people most of the time. If you want to read about the full how's and the why's read a decent book by someone who has trained lots of 'normal' people (eg; Dan John, Alwyn Cosgrove, etc). Plus most people simply don't have the time to spend more than 3x1-1.5 hour gym sessions per week.

A lot cheaper than I was expecting! Any idea on the best place to get an Olympic set from?

Not really in central though, cheapest is around 20 otherwise there's high travel costs.

I lived in central london last year (EC1) and found a gym for £20 a month with pretty decent equipment (Barbican YMCA), stop making excuses

Better to join a gym with great free weight section for £50/60 a month or buy home weights?
