Unis that are good for journalism?

Hey everyone, so I want to do journalism at uni and I was wondering if anybody recommend any unis?

Also, please don't give me places like Oxford, I'm around a B student and I think I'll get around 300 UCAS points overall.

My subjects are - A level English lit, A level photography, BTEC Film & TV media, BTEC Print & journalism Media.

Thank you everyone

(I also run a blog so if you'd like to have a look at that it's www.indieicon.wordpress.com :colondollar: )

Hi . I was intending to go into journalism, too, before I was warned that I could be a coffee girl for a company for a year before being swiftly dropped for a new face. It's a tough world. It appears that Sheffield is the cream of the crop for Journos, but for a B grade student, I would recommend Northampton - I have a friend studying English there and she seems to enjoy it, and I've heard that there are a lot of course options available.

My advice is to a joint honours course - 'journalism with' or 'journalism and' - otherwise you are limiting yourself to one career path only. If you change your mind either during your degree or later in life, you only have a very narrow vocational degree subject to fal back on. 'With' another subject makes your degree study more interesting, flexible and you'll have more options later.

See http://www.dmu.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate-courses/journalism-ba-degree/journalism-(joint-honours)-ba.aspx as one example.

OR, do a more general History, Politics, Media or English degree and do a more specialised post-graduate Masters in Journalism later.

That's quite funny actually because Northampton is probably my first choice right now, I really like it there
And yeah it's very hard to get into so I'm not sure if I'll end up doing an English degree instead of journalism!

On top of that, I would suggest doing an English degree instead - Journalism does not require a degree so English may give you a better all-round knowledge and therefore make you more appealing to bigshots. Plus, it allows you to change your mind if you wish.
Just another quick question; do you think creative writing would be useful for journalism? That's probably the thing I'm best at (A* for my creative writing coursework at GCSE aswell as being a published poet  ) but I'm not sure if a degree would be useful for anything? :s-smilie:

You just read my mind :P
I had my heart set on Northampton about a year ago because it's big on English and close to home. I'm trying for Manchester now, though!

In regards to Creative Writing, you could do an 'English Lit with Creative Writing' course? That's what I'm after at Manchester because CW is my baby

Sheffield Uni is really good for Journalism! I went to the open day last Tuesday and it's amazing, I think they ask for 300points minimum/AAB and they don't require any specific subject at A level, just interest and experience  x
Sheffield don't even really ask for experience - I got in having only ever run my own blog :p: Just need to show willing and interest

I know Cardiff's good for journalism (lots of top journalists have gone there), but I think it's a postgrad course.
