Bye Holland, Hello London!

Hey (:

Like many other people on here I will be starting uni this year, and as I like writing I decided to start a Freshers Blog here!

I'll start with a little introduction...
I'm Loes, an 18 year old girl from The Netherlands. I'm currently still living in Oegstgeest, a town next to the student city of Leiden (which is south of Amsterdam and just north of The Hague), but I will be moving to London this Saturday! For the coming 4 years I will be studying Hispanic Studies and Linguistics at Queen Mary University of London.

Why London?
Do I even need to explain? I simply love London. I first visited London when I was 1 (I have family in the UK), but the first time I really got to know the city was when I stayed there a few days when I was 15. It was that visit that gave me the idea to look into university courses in the UK, and more specifically in London.
Another reason was the fact that I want to take a degree which is taught in English, as I've been taught in English since I was 7 (to make a long story short: I moved to Hamburg, Germany when I was 7 and attended the international school there. Moved back to The Netherlands when I was 14, continued my international school there and received my IB Diploma this year). I also prefer to be around international minded people (of which you don't find a lot in The Netherlands unfortunately) and London is of course a very international city.

In the summer of 2011 I went to London with my family to visit universities I was interested in (King's, Reading, Oxford, Cambridge, Royal Holloway and QMUL). At this point QMUL was basically my last choice, mostly because I didn't know much about the uni. But then I found out they have a course in Hispanic Studies and Linguistics...!

Eventually I applied to 5 different courses in September last year, I got rejected by Oxford in December and then decided I would make a choice between Hispanic Studies and Linguistics at QMUL and Hispanic Studies with English at KCL. To make the choice easier I visited an Open Day at QMUL in February, and decided that I loved the uni and the course!

I took my IB exams in May and after a loooong wait I heard my results on the 5th of July. I was really nervous about my results as I thought I had not done as well on my exams as I could have and thought I wouldn't meet my offer. Turned out I was nervous for nothing, as is usually the case with me and I even got one of the best results from my class!

And now uni is really close! I am leaving at 6 am on Saturday, my parents and brother are taking me to London by car so that I can take a whole lot of stuff with me. Still my mum is scared it won't fit in the car, haha. I still need to do quite a bit of packing tomorrow... and check whether I have everything. I kind of made a checklist but I am really bad at making lists so I probably forgot something. I think I'll just go through the house and grab everything I want/need!

I'm a little nervous about Freshers Week, I am a little shy and I don't enjoy excessive drinking but I think everything will be okay in the end! Oh and a friend from Hamburg is coincidentally also going to QMUL so I will have at least one person to talk to (:
I hope I can update you as soon as possible but it might take a while because I will hopefully be socialising with my flat and/or course mates!

Haha good luck! I have a friend doing biology at Queen Mary, he moved in today and still sounds pretty nervous :P I got a place at King's College so I'm heading up tomorrow (later today :s-smilie:)- it's all so stressful!
Moin Moin Loes!

It's so nice to see someone from the Netherlands wanting to come to England for a change, instead of the other way round.

For me it's the complete opposite, I've lived in London and now I want to go and study in the Netherlands and really want to go to the University of Amsterdam.

That's why it annoys me a little bit when some English students say they want to go to universities in the Netherlands mainly because the tuition fees are cheaper rather than going to learn and enjoy a different culture.

The way you talk about London is exactly how I feel about the Netherlands. I like the friendly nature of Dutch people and always have had a thing for their pop culture. I've listened to some songs by André Hazes & Marco Borsato and I am really into K3, Ch!pz and Djumbo (Please don't laugh)!

For the most past I think you will enjoy London as it has so many things to offer from so many different cultures. It is certainly one of the most multicultural cities in the world.

Have a g8 Freshers!

Was planning to update this blog once in a while but that hasn't really worked out...

Anyways, I'll update you now! Freshers by far wasn't as scary as I thought it would be! My flatmates aren't amazing (not really my type of people), but they're kind and we went out together the first night which was good. On the second day I met up with my friend from Hamburg who is also at QMUL and we spent all of freshers together. Over the weeks we formed a small group of friends, we're 5 people at the moment and sometimes others join us. I love how international the uni is, most of my friends are also not British and the British people are really interested in other cultures/languages.

Academically it has also been a lot better than I expected. So far I only got A's on my assessments! I really like my course, especially the linguistics part. I don't like the literature part as much but I think it's good for a bit of a change and I want to learn about Spanish/Latin American culture so I will have to live with it. At the moment I have an essay to do, due on Wednesday and I've just spent most of my holidays procrastinating. Luckily I already did a draft before the holidays but I still need to finish it! Flying back to London tomorrow so will work on it on Sunday I guess...

Queen Mary is in mile end I think....Not trying to discourage you but that area is not a very nice place, So if you plan on going out when you're not studying then head more west into London cuz god knows how many times I've almost been stabbed in the east end.
