Did you call them back? What did they want?

Intview invite (to start in 2013 or 2014). Not a lot of info on the LDN office out there, and this is an entirely new training program. So research/prep should be interesting.
Hi,

I have received an invite to an interview at Jones Day. Just wondering if anyone has had any experience with them whether it be at interviews or otherwise.

THis is my first interview so any help would be greatly appreciated.

Rejection from Herbert Smith, must have been that logical reasoning test, sadly.

Hey sorry to hear about that :frown: i know how hard rejections are :frown: Just wanted to know how quick you heard back from them after doing the tests?

Hi,

I wonder if anyone will be able to give me some advice.

I am currently researching TC/VS in London and I am struggling to decide where to focus. I graduated in 2010 from a good university with a 2.1 law degree. However, it was very low/on the border. Most of my grades are on the border line. With a few in first year lower 2.2. I was ill for quite some time and did not do as well as expected during my degree. Although I know this will now make life searching for a tc much more difficult, I do still want to become a solicitor.

Since graduating I have worked at several large firms, albeit in their regional offices, as well as undertaking legal work experience abroad for several months. I am interested in media work so I am trying to get some work experience in this area as I understand this is an area that most firms want people with previous experience in it.

What level of firm should I realistically be looking at?

Also can anyone give advice on getting media work experience?

Thanks.

Congratulations!!!

A&O are one of the firms that interviews the least people (proportionally) from its applicants pool, if Chambers is to be trusted, so you've done extremely well to get this far! In a sense you've already gone through the hardest part of the process (statistically) so maybe that will help you relax a little.

All the best with the interview!

Ooh, that's nice to know!
im just worried because I'm not great at containing my nerves in interviews! Haha.

Thank you!

I am not by any means a guru in those things, however I do think that since you graduated a couple of years ago, the firms will attach great importance to what you have achieved since your graduation, so if you have a good amount of experience then go crazy! Grades do matter of course, but probably less so for "experienced" hires or young graduates.

What's the worst that can happen anyways? Rejections will not end your life however the lingering "what if...?" might do

Why not apply to those large firms you've worked for?

About media work, I have no clue, hopefully someone else can help. However I'd tread carefully at this stage mentioning a heavy preference for a field over another. Showing interest in a particular area of work is great, but saying something like "I absolutely want to work in XXX" in these large firms may make the recruiters uneasy because they cannot guarantee there will be spots available on qualification in this particular area, so they'll go with someone less "specific". Unless obviously you're applying for a firm specialised in that area then it makes total sense

All the best with your applications. Dive in and see what comes of it!

You are right. I just need to focus on my experience, work hard on the applications and be positive!!

Thanks for the encouraging advice

I would also add a quick point as I was also a graduate for a few years when I was looking and ultimately got my TC. Be prepared to talk about why you don't have a TC yet and have a good answer ready for that. Ultimately, if you're invited to interview, firms will look at where you've had work experience and ask you why you didn't apply to those firms (if you haven't and if you have why you weren't successful) and also why you think you still don't have a TC.

That can be quite daunting especially if you're not prepared.

Good luck.

Hey guys, been mostly loitering in the VS thread but just need a vent about TC's! Had a BLP TC interview yesterday, the wait is agonising. Anyone been through the process and have an idea of how long they take to respond? They said hopefully in a couple of week, but I've heard it can be a few days...? Massively clutching at straws anyway but I think I fluffed it so just want closure and to move on if anything!

Just be yourself.

It's the most unscripted interview I ever went to. More like a conversation where almost every question follows from your previous answer and where they want to get to know you. No competency bs standard questions (well at least not in my case). The article discussion in my case was rather short.

And as to the written exercise, let's say 30 minutes is a short period of time so you need to time yourself carefully but apart that it's quite straightforward!

Not gonna put more details here cause otherwise suff is gonna be on my case again

Thanks for that. How about the HR interview? Anything complicated there?

I remember having an interview at BLP at the beginning of November 2011 and they took until the beginning of December to inform me of the outcome..

That's quite a while! What was the outcome may I ask?

Negative... Those who were offered vac schemes at BLP found out a few days later. This was for a vac scheme, not a TC though, but from what I remember BLP treat it all as one and the same anyway.

Ah I see. I've already completed to winter vac scheme so this was the standard TC interview afterwards. Not sure if that will matter.

I didn't actually interview for the VS, just AC.
