Don't have a beard anymore, shaved it all off. Just stubble now.

Shame, I enjoyed being a sexier version of Henry VIII

Forgive me if this makes no sense, I just came up with it in the shower and was kinda excited so wanted to share... (I should shower more often if this is what happens...)

----

I often hear heaven/hell explained along the lines of "God can't bear evil so, his very nature is to punish evil. Look at the evil in the world, aren't you glad God cares?". Which seems plausible until the suggestion comes that heaven/hell isn't decided by our actions, but purely by faith. (and let's not get started on election). Bad people can be saved - that's the core of Christianity. But given that, the first argument no longer seems to make sense.

I was listening to a sermon this week and I can't remember the exact context, but it discussed God's justice. The suggestion (apparently that CS Lewis made) was that whilst today we see the purpose of justice/punishment mainly as a deterrent (i.e. to discourage others from doing the same) and for restoration/rehabilitation (i.e. so afterwards the offender won't recommit) then we shy away from it's retributive nature (i.e. that there is something inherently right about punishing wrongdoing).

Anyway, so my realisation tonight was that God's justice fulfils all three: the retributive nature is probably most obvious. But hell is clearly a deterrent. And the seemingly unjust case where God forgives the sinner is an example of the restorative aspect.

----

I expect I'll wake up tomorrow morning and realise i've written a load of nonsense... but maybe I won't

IMHO though perfect justice requires mercy in which case I have a problem with retributive hell... But then again I have no idea what I believe about hell so there we go :ahee: A penny for your wonderful thoughts *tips*

In other news, i'm glad to say that the pasta turned out well! Slightly too much chilli powder but it's not enough to ruin it. Now just waiting on the chocolate pudding to see if that pulls through...
Don't fear, because I am with you;
Don't be afraid, for I am your God.
I will strengthen you,
I will surely help you;
I will hold you with my righteous strong hand.

You sir, must have a big oven. Or pan... Although you'll probably have some pretty expensive electric bills by the times she's done #overthinking too much
I was bored. So I found this. As it's wonderful. Heck yeah Tim Vine.

One night I dreamed I was walking along the beach with the Lord.
Many scenes from my life flashed across the sky.
In each scene I noticed footprints in the sand.
Sometimes there were two sets of footprints,
other times there were one set of footprints.

This bothered me because I noticed
that during the low periods of my life,
when I was suffering from
anguish, sorrow or defeat,
I could see only one set of footprints.

So I said to the Lord,
"You promised me Lord,
that if I followed you,
you would walk with me always.
But I have noticed that during
the most trying periods of my life
there have only been one
set of footprints in the sand.
Why, when I needed you most,
you have not been there for me?"

The Lord replied,
"The times when you have
seen only one set of footprints...

...is when I thought it would cheer you up if we hopped."

Tim Vine's view of God is magnificent

Yep  Not all of his stuff but that's gorgeous  Although I do get disappointed now when we sing it in church do the traditional version instead :teehee:

I think I actually heard his version first but it just turned out to be a beast to track down. I actually really need to get into more Stand-up Comedy, I used to be fairly good but if they haven't been on QI or Radio 4 extra I have no idea.
