Over brushing can lead to the enamel on your teeth coming off.

My dentist told me to be careful when I was brushing my teeth because I was starting to wear my gums away! 4 times a day could be a little too much - I use mouthwash instead if I want my mouth to feel cleaner, maybe you could try that?
it could cause receding gums aswell. using a soft toothbrush helps

Yes it isnt good for the gums. If I were you id clean them 3 times a day max and use gum/mouthwash the rest of the time.
Ok thanks...don't know why I never thought of mouthwash.
Can't excess fluoride also leave brown stains on your teeth?

Is it possible to damage your teeth by brushing them too often. I know you can if you brush them too hard but I sometimes brush my teeth upto 4 times a day and wondered if this could become a problem.

Whenever I change the head on my electric toothbrush my gums become really sore for a bit. Then the head softens up a little and it's fine.
Also, it's recommended you don't brush your teeth shortly after drinking something particularly acidic (orange juice, grapefruit juice, coke). I'm guilty of doing this most mornings, because I can't wake up without a glass of decent orange juice, but if it can be avoided, do so.
