The Student Room Group

Not enjoying my first week so far

Hey guys,

I've joined a uni in london and have been here for over a week now. Before arriving, I was more excited than nervous and thought nothing but positive (foolish, yes) but now I feel so low.

So far, I'm not keen on my flatmates. We live in a flat with 5 girls inc. me. 2 girls NEVER come out of their room. I've knocked several times on one girl's door and she does talk sometimes but she doesn't seem too keen and would rather sit on her own. The other girl just sticks with people from the same country as her. As for the other 2 girls, they're already best friends it seems and are best friends with the girls in the flat next door. I feel quite excluded. They do sometimes involve me and I do socialise with them but I don't think I'm going to click with these people. The guys in the flat next door (3 of them) are VERY eccentric.
As for my course mates, half of them just stick to their little nation groups like the French people will just speak French to each other, the Russians, Russian etc. so there's only a very few who are openly willing to socialise with people not from their countries.
And society stuff is spread all over the city so I find it annoying to travel so much in a city I barely know.

Overall, please tell me it might get better and I might make friends. I feel pretty lonely and homesick right now and yes, I know I may sound like a whiny brat but I'm genuinely upset :frown:

It will get better. Just get out of the flat and see the city. You will have to get to know it at some point so why not do it now.

You have only been there a week there are still more people to meet than the people in your flat and your course. Its a big city with plenty of people to become friends with. I know a decent club where everyone is friendly and you can meet people from all around the place there.

I know how you feel, I'm in the same situation as you. But with the Middle Easterns and Chinese keeping to themselves. Where are you studying?

I'm hoping to find people to socialise with.
