I'm a computer science student going to York this year!

The ssh guide is good on page 2 of this thread however you can do more then just browser websites with it and you will need to set the http proxy to the universities http proxy in the http tab or connect to the computer science department computer first cs.york.ac.uk.

Once you have created the local tunneled sock proxy with putty and the -D option, you can use the programs below to allow any program to connect through the sock proxy.

Windows: http://www.freecap.ru
Linux: http://tsocks.sourceforge.net/
(The putty on linux is just ssh -D 1200 serveriphere.com on a terminal)

Your best bet for a ssh server is to rent one for about 10$ a month from a company as a "web host".

Also if you do computer science they provide a ssh server for you to use. I would be careful about using it.

Now p2p isn't a really good thing to do at university I mean your going to stick out like a sore thumb with the upload bandwidth it uses.

(I just want to play Warcraft 3 here and maybe ventrilo)
This will also allow you to do all most anything....

You can also host via ssh as well but I'm not sure how to do that with putty only openssh on linux.

P.S. My name isn't Alex nor do I come from Korea regardless of my IP xD

There isn't a computer science server that proxies to the outside world. Each CS lab PC is unfirewalled, so there's no need for it. The only thing you can do with Milan (the student CS server) is SSH tunnel, so it's pretty limited... I do use X Forwarding with it though, but that's the only advantage. Last year, I had a shell to run BitTorrent, and then FTP'd it to my laptop. SSH tunneling was only used for EVE ONLINE and Ventrillo.

I used milan a few times to run epic, feel free to spit at me ;p

all accommodations in the campus has very fast broadband connection.. all for just £60 a year....

So, I'm a shameless MMORPG player (hence the avatar), and I have subscriptions to both FFXI and WoW. Do either of these actually work on York's network? I've known FFXI to run fine without any listening ports (completely unconfigured router), but I don't know if it could get past what sounds like an extremely restrictive proxy... Any thoughts?

york actively block ports. so none of these will work (off the cuff) but when we get there, i can totally come over and sort it out for you, you need two simple programs alled putty and sockscap and a shell account (about £1.50 a month) - i've allready got WoW working (i tested it by blocking ports on my home network  but my ping hangs around 300ms (god knows what it'll be in raids!)

The proxy is not as restrictive as you think.. its a very good network.. hopefully your WoW and FIFXI will work in that...

The proxy restricts anything that's not SSH, FTP, e-mail and web. So yes, it's very restrictive.

You need a tunneling program, as jpiper correctly states.

Alright, thanks for the replies. I wouldn't call myself a computer dunce, so I'll look through some tunnelling today.

It's probably not worth it. You're only at york for 30ish weeks of the year or something, so if you're there for 3 years thats 90 weeks of your life, do you really want to be wasting all that time playing WoW (and I know how addictive it is, my brother plays it)?

Mind you, I'm spending some cash before I go uni upgrading my PC

I said I'm a shameless MMO player, not an MMO addict. I know how often the two traits coincide, but I don't plan on playing every day I'm at university.

JPiper, I'd appreciate your help in setting this up. I have a web host I can arrange SSH access to, hopefully they won't mind what I plan to use it for...
Hi,

I've heard from people at other uni's that have done their first years that they weren't allowed to use webcams on msn unless it was to other people on campus. I was just wondering if this is the same with York, or can you use webcam regardless of where the other person is (ie. a completely different uni)?(not necessarily video convos)

Thanks

Webcams work on Yahoo, not on MSN.

webcam also works on Skype.
jpiper (or anyone else), can you recommend somewhere I can get a shell account that gives me the ssh access I would need for tunneling?

Thanks,

Matt

i get mine from darkstarllc.com (its only $2.50 a month) but depending on what you're going to be using it for (i.e. internet gaming where you need a low ping) you might be better going to a UK company.

Acquisition (limewire for macs), msn, and the internet, however, work a treat using the shell account from the company i mentioned. (I've even got world of warcraft running, but with a ping of 200 or so)

eth0

PS: Soulfish, I am pretty sure that "half decent" computer scientists have never heard of the term ssh tunneling :P

*Is doing CS*
*Hasn't heard of ssh tunneling*
*Will be hunting for eth0 when he gets to uni*

Thank you. They look pretty good, I think I will probably give them a go. I'm not a big gamer, but I would like to get BitTorrent working for the odd tv show, so I've got to try something... :-)

Ooh, make sure it is odd, the university won't like you sucking up tons of their bandwith with Torrents.
I'm seriously reconsidering further education now. No torrents for thirty weeks out of the year? Jesus.
