I'm 28, currently on a access course and i've applied to study history and politics in September. The only conditional offer i have so far is from Brunel. I don't want to live with 18 year olds either. I have done enough partying for one lifetime i'm going to uni to work. Good luck everybody!

What have you been doing since 18? Youth is wasted on the young

Working. I didn't know what I wanted to do or if I even wanted to go to university. Not everybody goes there straight from school! Least I know now what I want to do, better late than never..

That was a bit harsh of me, sorry. Also, I am literally in the same postition, and I feel like I have "wasted" my youth. I don't know how you feel about that though.
Worried i'm gonna be too old when I start (24)

I haven't started Uni yet but will be 25 when I start this September. I'll be doing the whole experience so halls and everything. I still feel quite young for my age and am loving college despite everyone else being a good eight years younger but I won't be out drinking every night. I don't enjoy going out at all and I'd rather spend money on something worthwhile so will find some other way to socialise.

That's alright, I do feel the same sometimes but nothing I can do so aslong as I get where I want to be by the time I'm 30 then I'll be happy enough. You won't be too old, there's plenty older people who go and 24 isn't even old anyway. You'll be able to have the same experience as the 18 year olds

I'm 21 will be 22 when I get there and definitely don't want to be put in a 'mature hall,' do what makes you feel more comfortable. There are loads of people on my access course who are 19, which is a bit weird but then quite a few who are 40 and over. If you like to go out don't mind the noise and want the 'uni experience' go for halls. Go in with an open attitude and you'll be fine but If you think you'll fit in better with the matures do that. For most unis there's an opportunity to swap if you really don't like where you end up anyway.

Hey yah. I know what u mean ..Im starting uni this year as well.. halls and all but l wouldnt want to be put in halls with way older people or too young as well ..

what uni are you going to and what are you going to be studying

I know it's so difficult!! I was at a restaurant last week and overheard a group of 18 year old boys talking and generally cracking up at the idea of a baby deer dying..I couldn't live with that lol. But at the same time I do want enjoy myself.
I'm not sure yet atm Liverpool for psychology but I'm waiting to hear back from Sussex, what about you?
I'm 37 and in my first year of uni, I absolutely love it and there is a good mixture of ages from 18 to 49 and I have had no problem. I do find that the mature students are the more confident ones of the group and perhaps this is due to experience.

I'm 26 but I've deferred my place so I won't start Uni until I'm 28
Sometimes I do think perhaps it's a little old for starting over again but then I think ah who cares just go for it.

O I am 29 and thinking about going back to uni I was just wondering how old mature students usually are? just depend weather i would be better off trying pot luck with all students or be better off asking to be put with mature students. in halls?

Ill be 34 and starting my Geoscience degree in sept, not because I couldn't get work, I'm leaving finance to do it, simply because I want to work at something I enjoy from now until the day I retire.

I live in Glasgow, so I won't be staying in halls, however if I didn't have my own house and a family, I would be all over halls or student flat share simply for the social aspect.

You should start the ball rolling ASAP, as you may not even be able to get a place until next sept, and may even require an access course.

Good luck.
50 next week, currently doing a Masters and applying for doctorates.

Age is irrelevant when it comes to the studying part of the uni experience. Us oldies have no advantage just because we're older and more experienced in our specialist subjects - the younger students are just as engaged and reflective. Equally, the fact that we've been out of education for longer (i.e. 'out of practice' when it comes to producing a quality piece of academic writing) doesn't matter - it's like riding a bicycle, you don't forget. And friendship groups within the course aren't segregated by age which is interesting, I thought the oldies would stick together but that's not the case at all

Living in halls though - that's a different matter. Much as I hate to admit it. I'd be too old for that. And I think my family might miss me…...

That was a joke btw...

So are you trying to say that mature students shouldn't be allowed the same experiences? Not particularly weird because in hardly old am I? Plus half of those 18/19 years olds probably look older than me! I've never had anybody say to me "Jeeze what you doing in this pub, your far too old to be talking or drinking with us young ones"
