Accountancy Apprenticeship or Accountancy at Uni

I am a 16 year old student currently at college. I am interested in Accountancy and was wondering if to get an apprenticeship or go to Uni! I am predicted 1 A and two B's out of my AS levels so was wondering whether to stay at college! I have recently been on a work placement and I was offered a apprenticeship with a local firm! I originally wanted to go to uni but I was just wondering what I should do! Your advice would be appreciated

Thanks
I'm in my final year at college and was so sure that I was going to do an apprenticeship in accounting or finance because I didn't really want to go to uni but I have reconsidered my options and I'm thinking of doing accounting and finance at uni. Your predicted grades are good but getting an offer for an apprenticeship is good as well so it's really up to you. If you want to earn money while learning and gaining qualifications then go for the apprenticeship you are most likely to be accepted permanently after finishing your apprenticeship, if you want a degree a qualification that is recognised and appreciated then go to uni, with a degree you can do an internship if you wish in anything so consider that too. I changed my decision because I wanted to gain the uni experience and I felt that by goibg to uni I will be fully aware about accountancy or finance. Hope that helps

Hi there,

Congratulations on being offered an Apprenticeship position.

University is undoubtedly a great route into a successful career. However, not all careers require a degree such as Accountancy. Professional Apprenticeships in Accounting can be a fantastic route into an Accounting career offering you first hand experience from day one and those all important professional qualifications that you would still be required to complete after you have been to university. It is almost a fast track route into Accounting. And you will be earning a salary!

We are actually offering an Accountancy Scholarship at the moment worth £15,000. So basically if you were one of the eight lucky winners, we would help you find an apprenticeship role and then once this is complete, we would fund your further qualifications up to fully-qualified status. So you could actually become a Chartered Accountant or Accounts Technician without going to university and without having to fund any of it yourself! If you are interested then why not apply here?

With it being National Apprenticeship Week this week, we actually have a dedicated Q&A forum for any apprenticeship questions you may have - feel free to ask us anything else you would like to know here.

We look forward to hearing from you.

Hi
Congratulations on the offer of an apprenticeship, you obviously impressed them. It is worth considering a few things:

- Do you want to move away from home and have the "university experience"?

- How important is earning money at 18 (ie your personal / family circumstances)

- I assume the firm would pay for you to do AAT - would they support you through ACA or ACCA afterwards

-Would you be happy there for 3 - 6 years (obviously you can apply elsewhere but it is easier as a qualified)

- will the firm give you the experience you want - you will probably get good account experience, early responsibility and good general tax experience. Audit is likely to be much more limited.

- assummimg you also get ABB at A level you would have access to lots of university courses, not just accounting & finance if you wanted to specialise later. You would also be in a good position to apply for big 4 school leaver schemes if you wanted.

Make the decision you feel is best for you - you are obviously a good student, and you have a real choice about what route to follow into accountancy.

Even if you decide not to go for the apprenticeship, try and get more work experience with them - it will only help in the future
Good luck
