The Student Room Group

Why is the muscular physique so popular on here?

For men and women. I keep seeing people posting photos of people they think are hot and they're either massive body builders or very muscular women. Nothing's wrong with personal preference but why is this look so popular here?

I've also never seen this in real life. I know a couple of guys into gym but they're in the minority and they're not jerks about it.
I also notice a lot of "lol do you even lift" and bodybuilding references. Why does the STUDENT room have such a prominent (aggressive) bodybuilding community?

What do you classify as bodybuilder?

The vast vast VAST majority of people on here do not qualify as bodybuilders in terms of aesthetics.

The majority of people on here are just people who frequent the gym and range from just starting out to fairly swole.

I personally think its good that there is a growing popular culture around staying fit and in shape. We need more of it imo.

Probably for the same reason you're obsessed with 1950s attire.

A lot of guys on here seem a bit obsessed tbh.
Why wouldn't people lift weights is a far more perplexing question

-Takes at max 1 hour per day, and is great stress relief
-Allows you to eat a ****load of food and not get fat
-Various health benefits
-Gets you physically strong
-Makes you look much better, for both guys (obviously) and even for women (squats = win)

So yeah, why wouldn't you lift?
Also none of the kind of physiques idolised here are "massive bodybuilders" or anything remotely close
I agree with the OP. I mean, I don't even know if this is photoshop-ed or real but this is by no means attractive. (I know this is probably a bit more extreme than what the OP is saying but I think I'm conveying the gist across). body-builder-29.jpg
It's probably to do with massive insecurities, I don't personally see the attraction of muscly physiques either, they can be quite gross actually.
No idea, the best figures on men are just lightly muscled

1) work 10 hour shifts

2) don't enjoy eating

3) can get health benefits from other exercises

4) I'm not a Neanderthal so that won't benefit me(not an insult just saying in modern life that's not a benefit)

5) don't like the way it looks personally

I'll stick to running thanks.

It's pretty obvious, I'm surprised you even have to ask.

There's nothing wrong with wanting to maximise your physical potential. Some people like to work on writing books. Some people like to work on creating pieces of art. And some people like to work on their bodies to make them bigger and stronger. I don't understand why it attracts so much negative attention and bothers so many people. It's perfectly fine for someone to want to become stronger. In fact, I would say that every man should strive to become bigger and stronger.

If your body has the potential to change, to become stronger through strength training, then why not do it? It's quite a nice hobby, you can meet people who share a similar interest.

I just don't understand why it bothers people so much.
Because many students go to the gym due to the amount of free time they have and due to their age/situation, i.e. young and wanting to attract the opposite sex. The reason why it's so prevalent (or to use your loaded word, 'aggressive', which is only a whisker away from 'oppressive') is because most people will start going to the gym properly at university and therefore it's new and exciting and talked about widely; not to mention university is particularly susceptible to trends and peer-pressure.

It's pretty self-evident to me.

to each their own, but girls who lift weights look great, and girls who just do nothing but cardio in the gym scarcely make any progress whatsoever, they usually end up even more skinnyfat than when they started by burning away what little muscle they did have

You're entitled to that opinion but I prefer a more natural looking physique. Also what peogress? What am I meant to be progressing with? I just run because I like it.

Girls who lift aren't for me, it's cool if you like that, just wondering why on here it's so popular

OMG ****ing YES THANK YOU, there it is, that's ****ing exactly what I wanted to say!!! Seriously, why on earth would someone choose not to lift? Would rep you if I had any rep left! Very well said. Should be quoted on every thread that makes any mention of bodybuilding.

Can't say I've come across many of them myself, it might be something to do with psychology as to why the more athletic bodies are seen as attractive. How many of those posted pictures are of those heavily bubbled bodybuilders?

As for the 'do you even lift?' I think that's more of a 'macho man' thing, along with 'alpha' and the likes of, as opposed to ACTUAL bodybuilding attitudes (as in, why waste the energy taunting someone when you could use it to push out one more rep?). Although WHY that's said so often.. nope, I'm stumped too. I think it's more as a joke and never really meant in seriousness.

The latter part of this makes sense but in person it's not nearly as prevalent
