Applying to summer camp?

Hey there, not sure if I'm posting this in the right place at all, but any admin feel free to move it if needed.

So, iv applied to a few summer camps in america to work as a lifeguard at and have already been accepted to wildpacks and usa summer camp, they both want me to pay the 1st payment. I'm also in the middle of a camp america application and getting emails saying it's looking good so far and they want me to come for an interview, also got an interview for americamp coming up in a couple weeks.

what should I do if I don't know what camp to go with if they all want me to pay the 1st payment?

Just wondering what is the best camp to go with? Has anyone got any experiences with any?

Other general questions I have are,
What camp pays the most? (I'm applying with a NPLQ qualification)
Anyone got experiences working as a lifeguard at camp?
What kind of stuff do you do in each camp?
What kind of day trips do you get to go in with each camp?
How many days off you get in each camp?
Who will I be sharing a cabin/room with?
is there any point in taking mobile phone/ipad?
Do camps take a majority of your money away at the end if they paid for your flights?
Should I just jump right in and pay a payment or ask could I pay in a couple weeks after iv made my mind up of which camp I seem to like the most?

Also any other information that would be helpful to me would be great thanks.

Hi there!

Firstly, the decision to work in America at a summer camp this summer is a brilliant one and one you will never forget! We would know!

We can take a crack at answering a few of your questions for you.

To start, there's only one 'Camp America', and that's us! There are other companies that do the same thing, but we're the original summer camp experience, going since 1969! We offer the best service, we deal with the most amount of camps, and ultimately you have the best chance of being placed this summer by going through us. And we make it all extremely easy by doing all the hard work for you when it comes to finding the right camp!

As for your questions:

Every camp is different, so will pay different amounts over the summer. But you will receive at least $600, and the most you could earn is $1,200. this will vary depending on your camp, and to whether you have a particular skill set.

Lifeguards are very high in demand so you stand with a great chance of getting hired. AND it's one of the best jobs, because you're always outdoors and by the pool, as well as getting to join in with other camp activities!

Every camp's day is different, but depending if you're a general counsellor or activity specialist, you'll more or less spend the day with the kids taking part in activities, or even running them.

Some camps will do day trips to all sorts of places, whether it's to swimming parks, fairgrounds/theme parks, or even to museums/local tourist attractions. These are for the benefits of the kids so you will be supervising them, however you will have days off where you can explore and do whatever you please.

You'll get around 6 days off over the 9 weeks you're on camp. But you'll also have a number of evenings off during the week, and periods off during the week. It's once again down to how the specific camp runs.

Most counsellors are usually bunked with the kids. But if you're working on a day camp (where kids go home every night) you'll be bunked with fellow counsellors.

You are more than welcome to take your phone/ipad, as they're always good for pictures and internet whenever you have wifi. But we can't be held responsible for any damages.

The camps do take a cut of your pocket money in order to have you at their camp and to cover your flights, but this will NOT be taken from the minimum $600 you will be paid. This also means your outward flight cost is covered in the £599 that you pay to Camp America, with your return flight included too.

In order to have your interview with us at Camp America, you will need to pay the first fee, which is £69 (which is refundable should you not get placed). So it would benefit you most to pay that and get interviewed as soon as possible so you have more time to get placed.

Hopefully this has opened your eyes to what we're all about at Camp America, and we've managed to answer your questions for you. As mentioned before... lifeguards are extremely in demand, so you will be in with an amazing chance of getting placed, should you choose to apply with us. We'll make sure you have an amazing summer!

Thanks!

thanks for the reply

Just wondering if I would need to do the american Red Cross lifeguard course as working as a lifeguard, or would be working with a NPLQ be alright?

And would I be able to request a placement at a day camp?

Thanks again.

We do offer red cross courses through our website. It's £175 for a 5 day course, taking place either in Manchester or Northampton. You don't necessarily NEED a lifeguard qualification, as a lot of camps will train you once you arrive in America, but it will help you stand out amongst the rest on your application. If you have any lifeguarding experience or qualifications, that will put you in good stead for getting hired!

All applications are put forward to private camps (your typical American summer camp) and day camps, as that is what the majority of camps in the US are. However, you cannot request to be placed only at a day camp. You can choose which camp types you are willing/unwilling to work at, but we always recommend that you keep your options open and don't limit yourself to the types of camp.
