Dunno.

I sense you do know and you're deliberately playing dumb to wind me up

Because alpha males don't exist in wolf packs, let alone human society.

how can you verify this?!

Because real alphas don't need to tell people they're alpha.

Well, we're going from one extreme to the other here. The truth is somewhere in the middle - not warped into cynicism and paranoia, and not warped into naive bliss and comfort. People do judge other people, but the degree to which they judge can be both over- and under-estimated by people, according to the things that have influenced their perspectives.

hmm extremes, that's worth considering.

Are you being deliberately ironic? :h:

I've always found that ternaries tend to be a lot more useful than binaries.

you mean this doesn't occur on the rest of the Internet if not a subsection of society? :s-smilie:

I was keeping on topic. The question is in reference to threads on TSR.

I'm too alpha to answer such questions, absent jest.

Took me a moment to figure out that wasn't a radish.
Let's say for arguments sake that this alpha/beta thing exists

There's a LOT of guys (especially on the misc) who'd describe themselves as "alpha" which kinda defeats what it means to be an "alpha male" If there was such a thing they wouldn't refer to themselves as an "alpha" or even use beta or alpha in an insulting way ie: look at you trying to be all alpha etc...

These people are generally quite insecure as well (Or it seems) ironically making them a "beta" by their own definitions

And say it exists. Define it. Who is an "alpha" in this scenario

a pretty strong, but dead beat dad. Doesn't work but has the power to totally crush you

OR

a pretty weak but high flying person , who hasn't even reached the height of their career and is going places purely because they have direction??

One's physically alpha, the other's a corporate alpha. Even the misc is inhabited by both.

Now the real question is, do betas exist, and therefore what makes the difference? Should we regard somebody who's weaker, or does' have as high-flying a career, as 'beta' which is essentially second class? This whole idea of a social hierarchy is uncomfortable and yet, somehow difficult to deny.

OK say one is a corporate alpha

By the misc definition that corporate alpha was only ever able to get where he was by being dedicated to his career, learning a lot, that sorta stuff (Stuff that would be seen as "beta" )

And you can't just become one or the other..
lol at there being "alphas" on misc.

bodybuilding is about as alpha and self-assured as owning a penis pump.

I'm not sure where you get this from. The general consensus for what makes an indisputable beta is being

insecure,
fat,
ugly,
lazy,
Stupid
boring,
depressing to be around
no/bad sense of humour
lacking in hobbies or personality,
socially awkward particularly regarding one's favoured sex,
a virgin and very frustrated/vocal/bitter about this due to the above factors,
poor
and lacking any emotional or financial independence or self responsibility for life skills (hence "living in your mum's basement").

So a very 'alpha' person would be both fit AND ambitious/climbing their career ladder. It's on a scale-hence social hierarchy.

I never subscribed purely to the chest thumping meatheads on the misc. :s-smilie:

My issue is with aspiring to be a mortal Superman, and to what extent I should be anxious about where I stand on this hierarchy (which some people claim to not really exist.) In my current worldview you can be more Alpha because you are a mod. But there may be a more alpha mod than you with more power, or you may be 'betafied' by saying bad jokes or generally absurd or depressing things. I make this debate a lot and EVERY time the essential binary categorisation of people/behaviours into attractive and unattractive-alpha and beta-is evident.

OK fair enough, but my point is that if you are going to be this "corporate alpha" as it were, you might well have some of the traits you described above, which you're defining to be "meta"

Nope, but you did talk about "corporate alphas"

I don't mean you personally make bad jokes or say depressing things! I am making up hypothetical scenarios. Sorry it must have come out that way, I think you're cool

I differentiate between corporate alpha and BB misc alpha because Misc alpha is mostly about being ripped or massive, and easily getting laid. Corporate alpha is simply executive positions or places of authority. Alpha tends to mean first, authority in layman usage of the word.

Yes, it's a difficult thing to define, and although I would like to say that everyone has a different value system, in practice I find we're socialised to value very similar things-what these are is typically defined by our culture.

It will be nice when one day we think being a kind, loving soul who brings happiness and peace to humanity is 'alpha'-unfortunately I don't say it any time soon under the capitalist model…

And under the current model, very few people are alpha (awesome) all round. Although I wonder if it is possible.

Now the problem is, when people call me 'beta', they mean all round too.

Not the ones I'm referring to, I meant the likes of Philip Philtrum, Sick Brah, in the past Jamie TT/Drake, I could name a few more

If they took it seriously they would be admitting to being beta. Like other animals there are alpha and beta males.
