I'm not worried about things being difficult - I've got my A levels and my degree...I'm just interested in studying a subject I've not really looked into before - one which interests me.

ahh...didnt know that
then u'll find it ok then!
and maybe u'll find it interesting too!

I'm thinking of doing maths.

As long as it isnt too hard. Either that or politics.

politics!
they give u so much work, mind u it is interesting as it involves everything u do
maths could be a gd one as i could imagine there are quite a few jobs for ppl with maths as not many ppl take it

My school doesn't offer GS. I wouldn't really count it as a full AS, but interesting all the same if you have the inclination.

I already have my degree so I'm not so much worried jobwise its because I want to do a course without the pressure and see how I do.

I had a really rubbish maths teacher at school which is the reason I didnt take it for A Level so it would be interesting to do it now.
Politics would probably support my masters better though and would be interesting, because I do feel a little ignorant about it. The estimated time required to do it distance learning is 60 hours which is nothing and they provide all the course material so I am thinking seriously about politics.

yeah, the most difficult thing about politics is that u have three hours to do 3 papers (2 out of 4) that take half an hour each- a 5mk, 15mk, and 30 mk- all in half an hour!

if you cant get a decent grade in it there is something to worry about.

I disagree - general studies isn't as easy as people think it is

I didn't say it was easy.

I said it tests for the skills and knowledge that should be standard in any student studying at university level...and therefore someone wanting to study at that level should be worried about their ability to cope if they're unable to get a decent (by that I mean D and upwards) grade in General Studies.

What you said implied that it was one of the easier subjects. I am not at university level.

What I said was
Although it does in some cases simply involve turning up it covers the basic skills and general knowledge of how the world works that should be a minimum standard for higher education - if you cant get a decent grade in it there is something to worry about.

The comment you quoted was intimately linked to the comment about minimum standards for higher education. I wasn't implying it was easy - I was implying that it *should* be easy if you're wanting to study at university level. If you have trouble getting a decent mark in GS you will almost certainly have trouble with a degree.

Is that so? So if i get a bad mark in general studies do you really think that institutions such as the University of Manchester will care?

Some people are polymaths and others are specialists.

Maybe the syllabus has changed drastically in the last 10 years but when I were a lass (I am an old lady of 30 - 210 in cat years) GS was an a'level one took if one wanted to add an extra a'level to the standard 3.
its voluntary at my school. only 3 people in my year did it

i feel that u shouldnt be pushed into doin general studies if u dont want to
half the uni's dont accept it anyway so wots the point in doing it?
i know that it can look gd on ur report but i was talkin to someone who goes to oxford and she said that all she did was turn up for the exam!

It is voluntary at my sixth form college.

same, people only do it when they need a third subject

I had to do it at AS Level.. got a good grade - had a choice of whether to take it at A2, and carried it on for the sake of it. Another A Level, no work.. sounded good.

No, probably not.

I do think that if you tried your best and still got an E or a fail in GS you should be concerned about your ability to cope with a degree.

in my opinion an A in general studies can give your CV a little extra - shows you can handle maths/science if you mainly do arts and vice versa. i got full marks in all my general studies modules at AS, and most at A2... it looks good, shows youre balanced and interested in whats going on around you. BUT if you think youre going to get less than a B, possibly a C, i think it could be a little dangerous taking it... people might look at it badly, particualrly if they dont understand the exam and dismiss it as useless. getting an E in a "useless" subject makes you look very silly and i'd say youre better off without it. say you got 4 As and then an E in general studies, a university may start to question whetehr youre the kind of person they want... looks like you have no interest in current affairs or are so caught up in your own world you dont notice what other departments do. the top universities have plenty of people applying predicted all As and Bs, remember theyre looking for a good student too, someone who can present their ideas clearly and always be tkaing in information.
