Maintenance loan won't cover accomodation.

So, what it is, is that my loan won't cover my accomodation, I get 4550 I think, however, my dad ****ed off a long time ago, but I had to put down my mum and step dad's earnings, and they come to over 40K. My family have never ever given me money etc. And I can't expect my step dad to pay the way for a child who isn't even his, however, I still had to put his earnings in and what not? Are there any grant's I can apply for or whatever? I've worked since I was 11, and have never took a hand out off my parents, they don't just have money to throw at me, so, are there any last ditch places I may be able to get a grant cus of my absurd circumstances etc.

I'd ring student finance and ask them if there is anything that can be done, it doesn't harm to try. However you are likely going to have to contend with the reality which faces many middle class students: their parental income only allows them access to the minimum student loan, yet the financial support which student finance assumes will cover any shortfalls isn't forthcoming.

There are a number of options. A number of subject-specific grants are available, I'd speak to your university department about this. You can also apply to the student hardship fund at your university. Essentially, uni's put a budget away to support students who are not receiving enough money to make ends meet. This will provide you with some monthly support which might alleviate some of the financial pressures placed upon you.

At the end of the day however, you are simply going to have to find employment to support your studies. Yes it's unideal but many students across the UK have to do this. Bar and shop floor work are widely available. It is not fulfilling but it is flexible, and allows you to earn enough money to subsist on without consuming all your spare time. if I were you, I'd try to find a job now unless you already have one. If you worked for the next few months you could save enough money to cover financial shortfalls once you start uni!

Why did you not/ don't you apply to cheaper accommodation? You shouldn't be applying to accommodation you can't afford.
If you've been working since 11, do you not have any savings to help cover the cost of the accommodation?

If not, you could get a part time job during uni, which will cover the rest of the accommodation costs.

I thought that might be the case, I think i've already got a job sorted out for when I am there and I am saving now, doing 30-40 hour work weeks right now to save up, I was just wondering if people knew of any further grants or whatever for the peculiar circumstances.

The accommodation is only 90 pound per week as it is, I'd of struggled to find anything cheaper, I am currently doing 30-40 hours work in order to get a bit of money to fall back on if I **** up. I don't drink, smoke, or anything like that, I was just hoping to find any other types of grants people may know of.
And excuse me if this seems rude, but at 11 my sights weren't set on university whilst earning 15 quid a week, It's only in the last two years I decided to go, and like I say, I don't get handouts, I pay my way, therefore the job paid for all the expenses needed for college, It's not like I've been spending it on holidays etc.

Sorry, re-reading what I wrote, I did sound a bit rude. I didn't intend it to come across that way.

Did you have to get a 52 week let then? I know that at Warwick, most of their accommodations are 30/ 39 week lets (and then 42 weeks for Warwick accommodation properties in second year).

Yeah, I'm going to a specialised place called Futureworks, so there are no halls of residence for that specific place, so I've had to go private halls which let for 51 weeks, it's a little annoying cus I don't need to be there all the time.
I'm sorry for your situation and it is unfortunate. Without really knowing much about your family though, are you really sure they won't be giving you a single penny? My family are not the type to be spoiling me with lots of money and don't have a lot of spendable income, which made me think at first they wouldn't be giving me any money at first, but actually they did in the end. You don't need to particularly justify to me whether they are or are not going to give you money, just saying this in case you're worrying yourself over this while in fact they would actually have the money to help you. (and its not a handout, the whole system is based on your parents/guardians support so there's no shame in having their help)

Other than that, I'm at a loss at what you can do, but hopefully the work your doing now will help with money in the future
