German doctorates - is this true?

I have just met a Professor with three Doctor titles after his name - apparently each took only about 6months to a year. Is this accurate? I would like to consider this as I do speak German - but would I have had to have taken a German law degree to be able to do this kind of degree? Is it ever possible to write the doctorate in English in Germany (I was looking at LLMs and in many countries - e.g. Belgium - it can be done in English, as can the Doctorate (though there the doctorate is three years)). Although I speak German as I would probably be doing an international subject I would be interested to know if I could write it in English.

Apparently Law doctorates can be very short in Germany, they can take as little as a year (two semesters). It depends on your topic. You can also do a German LLM in one year. With the doctorate, you won't get an English Ph.D. behind your name but a Dr. jur. in front of your name... I'm not sure if you can do it in English though...
