What happens if Sodium hypochlorite and Sodium thiosulphate react

Why is it that when Sodium thiosulphate crystals were added to a solution of Sodium hypochlorite to neutralise the water, it started a violent chain reaction? Why are these chemicals incompatible?

I need it for my BTEC applied science course. We have to do a case study for the Distinction grade and this happened at my dad's workplace. Any help would be appreciated.

Wow... sounds like a tough chemistry question...I haven't covered this, but perhaps they have someone who knows here. Good luck!
