What's next once you've got your grades

So A-level results day rolls around, you get the grades you need and you're off to uni. At least, that's the plan.

But maybe it ends up a bit different. Maybe you miss your grades...but you still get into uni anyway. Or, you miss your grades and your uni place - but you get your insurance instead. Or you don't get your insurance either and...gah! It all seems to get complicated pretty quickly.

Tap on the quiz below to check our results day decision maker. It's an easy way to see exactly what happens on results day - however your grades turn out.

What you can do to be ready for exam results day

Hopefully our decision maker has helped you plan what might happen on results day.

For some more tips and pointers we spoke to Alistair Logan, associate director, admissions and VISAs at the University of Southampton.

"On results day, things can suddenly appear very complicated and overwhelming," he says. "You might have heard horror stories about how rushed it feels, the shock of receiving results you didn't expect or how competitive it is. It doesn't have to be a negative experience and there are things you can do to make sure it goes as smoothly as possible.

"It's always best to give some thought to your options in advance," adds Alistair. "Ahead of results day try to be prepared with a list of options for different scenarios, there are great opportunities available even if they were not your first choice initially.

"Whether your grades aren't what you expected, you’re changing your mind on where you want to study, or you want to focus on a different subject, there are still many options to choose from.

“Make a note of key dates and search current course vacancies to see what might be available. Universities can’t make any conditional offers in Clearing, so you’ll need to wait until you’ve got your results to apply. Check online again close to your results day as available places may change.”

Alistair’s top tips ahead of results day

1. You can still change your mind
If you’re having second thoughts about your choice, you’re not tied to it. You can still change your mind about your course or university. Even if you get the grades for your first choice, you can look for an alternative place through Clearing to make sure you have picked the right one for you.

2. Have a back-up plan (or two)
Even if you’re feeling confident, it’s a good idea to have a back-up plan, just in case things don’t go as you expect, or if they go even better than you hoped! Then on the day, if you’re feeling overwhelmed, you’re ready with a list of universities and courses, with their phone numbers. Consider discussing and sharing it with someone you trust; a friend or parent, so they’re able to support you on the day and remind you of the considerations that might get forgotten in the heat of the moment.

3. Talk to current students
Chat to current students at your preferred universities in the forums, as well as other people considering Clearing. Over the summer try to visit or connect with universities on social media to get a glimpse of what life’s really like there, to see if they’re a good fit for you.
