Here’s what to expect on A-level results day

What's next once you've got your grades

So A-level results day rolls around, you get the grades you need and you're off to uni. At least, that's the plan.

But maybe it ends up a bit different. Maybe you miss your grades...but you still get into uni anyway. Or, you miss your grades and your uni place - but you get your insurance instead. Or you don't get your insurance either and...gah! It all seems to get complicated pretty quickly.

Tap on the quiz below to check our results day decision maker. It's an easy way to see exactly what happens on results day - however your grades turn out.

What you can do to be ready for exam results day

Hopefully our decision maker has helped you plan what might happen on results day.

For some more tips and pointers we spoke to Alistair Logan, associate director, admissions and VISAS at the University of Southampton.

"Whether you’re having second thoughts about what you want to study, your grades aren't what you expected, or you're rethinking how far you want to study from home, it’s not too late and it’s a situation more common than you might think.

"On results day, in the heat of the moment, things can suddenly appear very complicated and overwhelming.

"You might have heard stories about how rushed it feels or how competitive it is. But, if you put in some time to plan in advance, you can make sure it goes as smoothly as possible resulting in the right choice for you.

"Regardless of your situation, it’s best to be ready with a list of options for different scenarios.

“Search course vacancies at your favourite universities to see what might be available. Most universities will show their vacancies and entry requirements from 5 July. Although make sure to check again close to your results day, as availability may change.

“Remember, universities can’t make any conditional offers in Clearing, so you’ll need to wait until you’ve got your results to enter Clearing.

“Make a note of phone numbers and have course vacancy web pages open on your phone. So as soon as you’ve got your grades you can apply, secure your place, and get ready to start uni in the autumn!"

Alistair’s top tips ahead of results day

1. It’s okay to change your mind
If you’re having second thoughts about your choice, you’re not locked in to it. You can still change your mind about your course or university. Even if you get the grades for your first choice, you can look for an alternative place through Clearing to make sure you’ve picked the right one for you.

2. Have a back-up plan (or two)
Even if you’re feeling confident with your choice and about your results, it’s a good idea to have a back-up plan, just in case things don’t go as you expect, or if they go even better than you hoped! Then on the day, if you’re feeling overwhelmed, you’re ready with a list of universities, courses, and phone numbers. I’d recommend you share it with someone you trust; a friend or parent, so they’re able to support you on the day and remind you of things that might otherwise get forgotten in the excitement of results day.

3. Sign up for more info
Sign up to Clearing updates from your preferred unis. You’ll get everything from step-by-step guides to Clearing, to invites to campus tours and virtual events, and learn what it’s really like studying at your preferred universities. They’ll also keep you up to date with course vacancies and link to their social accounts to see if they’re the right fit for you.
