Moving to Glasgow - any advice?

Hi

As the title above implies, I am relocating to Scotland as I have landed a role in Glasgow, and wish to follow it up later on with an MSc in Software Development at the university, on which I have already been accepted and intend to defer to 2017, depending on professional circumstances by August 2016.

What I would appreciate is advice on which areas within Glasgow, or near it, are worth considering for moving.

I am looking for somewhere with the following criteria:
-within £6 - £800 pcm
-allows pets
-2 bedrooms+
-up to a reasonably good standard of decor/furnishings

I've been advised that Glasgow's West End is probably a best fit in that respect, but I was wondering if there's any other nice areas in Glasgow, and if there's particular areas within the West End to focus on? Are any parts of the city definite avoids?

I'm also open to suggestions about parts of Edinburgh or the nearby towns in between the two cities that are commutable in under an hour and nice to live in.
