Interesting note: it used to be written in arabic script/alphabet till a military ruler switched it to latin script/alphabet in 70s.

Nah, I grew up mostly in West Africa and it's really popular there. When we moved to Lebanon it was one of the things I missed the most

Um, I have Arab friends and they're all really nice to me and have never said horrible things to me or about India. But I do think some countries especially gulf ones, look down on South Asians.

I agree with you. They mostly look down upon Pakistanis and Bangladeshis.
