Hi there my GF is considering doing ed psy so I know a wee bit about the route.

http://www.bps.org.uk/careers/areas/educational.cfm

take a look at that.

its a long road to Ed Psy.

You will need to get GBR of the BPS so you will need to get a masters that confers GBR as neither education or english/education will do this. See http://www.bps.org.uk/membership/grades/gbr1.cfm for info and courses giving GBR.

Once you have done your undergrad, you should look for a GBR confering masters.

You then need to do a 3 year doctorate of ed psy, but to get on this you will need some long-term experience with children (eg. teaching assitant)

You could also look at doing it in Scotland where you can do a 2 year MSc at Dundee or Strathclyde that makes you elligible for ed psy, however much more children experience is required.

If you wanted to speed things up a tad, try and get on to a GBR undergrad http://www.bps.org.uk/bps/careers/accredited-courses/accredited-courses.cfm?action=results&in_id=204&level_of_study=all&submit=Search, at shef hallam you have the choice of Psychology or Psychology/law. Get yourself a 2:1, go do a PGCE do an NQT year (so 2 years working with kids) then apply for the D.Ed.psy.

So you are looking at 8 years work really (might be able to knock a year or so off if you can transfer to 2nd year of undergrad somewhere).

Its surprising that ed psy requires mainly psy background and not ed.

good luck

The answer is yes BUT it takes time and money. Social work and educational psychology are very different things which require different qualifications.
