Is a Phd really needed to work in industry?

I want to do a Chemistry MSci with a Year in Industry however I have heard that a PhD is required to have a career in science whether you want to go into research or industry. Is this really true?
I would like to know this too

Research - yes, very likely candidates with PhDs are preferred as they would've been used to dealing with research when they were earning their PhDs in the first place.

Industry - Not so much. I think experience with different firms plays a much bigger factor here.
You don't need a PhD to have a career in research, but if you don't have the ability to get a PhD I dare say your R&D career will go nowhere fast. You can do Science-y things without a PhD but then you'll be in that not-quite-an-Engineer not-quite-a-doctor purgatory.
