Did anyone else go to the open day last Saturday? I found is so much more friendly than some of the schools I've been to. Now tied top choice with Bristol (although I'll happily go anywhere 😁)

Hey,

Sadly I couldn't make it :frown: How was it? x

It was great! It was a lot quieter (but friendlier) than some of the other open days I'd been to (i.e Newcastle).

We had a talk on admissions and heard from current med students - so fairly standard.

Then we had three sessions covering things like anatomy and clinical skills. The school is based on the same site as many of the hospitals and areas you would be rotating around - which I thought was great. The lecturers were also quite hands on with the open day and were all very approachable .

I'd never really been to Aberdeen before this and I thought the city itself was safe. friendly and had everything you'd want as a student. Good luck

Wow thanks  In terms of admissions, I've read around but I just want to be sure... How does it work? Do they take your PS into account when deciding who to invite to interview?

Where else did you apply to?

Sadly the personal statement is used more at interview stage - I think they look at it but it isn't scored before then. To get to interview stage, your UKCAT score is ranked along with all applicants and counts for 20% of your overall score and 30% is based on your academics. If you meet the academic requirements and have a score above 600 overall (the don't rate SJ as far as I know) I think you should be ok? I know last year the lowest score they interviewed wasn't by any means astronomical.

My UKCAT is very average and this is the part I'm most worried about tbh so wish they did bring in PS earlier :frown:

I've applied to Bristol, Glasgow, Aberdeen and Warwick. I'm an English applicant . How about you?

Yeah that's what I read. Thanks for that  Ah, so you're a graduate too! I am also an English applicant  I applied to Barts, Newcastle (both GEM and UG) and Aberdeen.

What did you study?

I hope I'll be ok, but they only take on certain number of English graduates onto the course (I believe by looking at the stats), even though quite a substantial amount of grads make up the cohort. That scares me...

Do you know if grads are compared to other grad applicants at Aberdeen? I meant to ask this at the open day :frown:.

I'm from an arts background and did an English-based degree - so not your typical biomed grad! I'm currently doing an access course to get my bio and chem up to speed, though.

Are you based in the north east by any chance? Just with you applying for both routes at Newcastle. I was going to apply there, but my UKCAT was average and felt it would have been a waste :frown:

Ah, thanks very much  Are you applying this year? Yeah that's no problem at all. I'll list below.

I'm a Scottish applicant so:

Nat5: AAAAAAAA
Highers: AAAAA
Advanced Higher Predictions: School didn't tell us :frown:
UKCAT: 617 Average (1850 total) Band 2
Personal Statement: 8 weeks of work experience in total, some sports and volunteering. 8 weeks was to be sure Medicine was right for me.
Universities applied to: Aberdeen, Dundee, Edinburgh and Bristol (in order of where I hope to get in most>least). Bristol I will reject if I get offered. Only applied for interview practice. My parents don't really trust me out of Scotland with an Audi and a place to myself -_- My mum thinks I will be some sort of player so she would prefer me to stay in Scotland. I only want to stay in Scotland because I don't see the point in paying 50k-60k alone for tuition fees when in Scotland it would cost £0.

Hope that helped

Ah all the best  Audi huh? Nice haha. Yeah I get that, if you're a Scottish applicant, you may as well stay and pay 0 fees than branch out and pay loads! I'm an englsih applicant, so unfortunately I have to pay regardless of where I go :frown:

Hahaha yeah. To get me to study my parents said if I got good grades they would buy me a reasonable car of my choice so I'm going for an Audi A4. Mum is kinda regretting it now though hehe! But I would like to stay at home because firstly, wouldn't have to pay and also, it would be so much easier just coming home everyday and not cook myself. Especially since I am a TERRIBLE cook.

Is it the same price for English applicants as for international ones?

What attracted you to Aberdeen since you're from England? Strange place to pick if you have options like Edinburgh etc? I'm curious
I love England btw. Especially Manchester. Love the dynamism of the place and it's home to Man utd!!!

Where did you apply if it's ok to ask?
Does anyone know if Aberdeen are usually quite quick to reply? I've had a look on last year's thread and saw people started getting interview invites on Monday 9th November - think we could start hearing back next week?

I bet haha! Yeah, I get that, it's just easier all round. No, I think its cheaper for English applicants but I'm not too sure!

Well Aberdeen was a gamble if I'm honest as it's the only one I haven't seen! I am a graduate applicant and so I applied to what seemed to me, the places that I stand most of a chance in getting in.

I have applied to NCL GEM and UG, Aberdeen UG (of course) and Barts GEM
Hi, Final year medical student at Uni of Aberdeen here - originally from London and also a post-grad.

I remeber when I was applying for medical school and freaking out, I found thestudentroom very helpful. Feel free to ask any questions and i'll try to help as much as I can.

Good luck to everybody and best wishes!

Hi, wow so final year, good luck! Any idea where you want to specialise?

Just a few questions. Did you find the distance between the medical school and home quite jarring or difficult? I live in Brighton so Aberdeen is quite literally almost the other end of the UK for me

Also, I know Aberdeen doesn't do cadeveric dissection, but did you feel you were able to learn anatomy fully with prosections and other methods?

Lastly, it's a long way off but I'm interested in the idea of the 'remote and rural' elective, did you or anyone you know take this and do you have any opinions on it, in comparison to normal teaching in city based hospitals?

Thank you
