Hiya

I can only comment on the English side of it, but maybe you'd like to PM Evil Muffin - she's just graduated from Exeter in English & American Studies.

In the first year of single hons English, you take Past and Present 1 and 2 (the literature modules) and Culture and Criticism 2 (the theory modules). This is good as you get to do a bit of everything, which gives you a solid base for your second and third years. In your 2nd and 3rd years you have to do one pre-1800 module, and in your 3rd year you have to do one core module and a dissertation as well. All your other modules in these two years can be whatever you like.

For the American Studies bit, your course is still three years - you just study in America for your second year. I gather the course is rather different, as is the way of marking, but you can talk to Evil Muffin about that
