i don't know that for certain! and no, i mean the ones that are close to ucl, ie. john dodgson/prankerd. i'm not at ucl so i might not be right but from asking around, it's what i've heard. i really liked john dodgson and was originally going to ask for it but after hearing that it's mainly grads, i decided to ask for schafer.

Damn, all the really nice houses with your own bathroom seem to be for grads! What abut ian baker house? It also says you can use the common room in Ramsay Hall. Again, is this a big inconvenience?

I've just got off the phone from the accommadation office and apparently all the rooms in every house have a telephone point which you can bring your own phone and plug it in. They said there is a company that deal with it and you can set it up through the house.

Back to the whol ensuite thing, I thought I read a few pages earlier that when they says "mainly grads" they meant they was ONLY (I say this lightly) 70-75% undergrads and opposed to some of the other houses which have 90-97%. If we get a group of undergrads that want to move in to a house with ensuie whats wrong with that. So long as there are some other freshers around.

The phone socket is also your internet socket (unless there's another socket somewhere in my room that I haven't found for the last 7 months), so unless you can get something to split it and have two, you'd only be able to use one at a time from what I can see.

lol
no i meant for using torrents, watching movies and downloading music etc
They don't seem to moniter what you're looking at from what I know, downloading is another matter. We got an email a month or so back saying that people downloading movies and music and the like illegally were hogging the bandwidth, and that anyone caught persistantly downloading stuff for free that should be paid for would be disconnected. Only fair really.

so,they will only ban for illegal downloading.

what if i'm using a lot of bandwidth, not from illegal downloading, but from things like 4oD,bbc iplayer, youtube, itunes, etc. do they warn you if you are using too much? cos,i heard in some uni halls they only allow certain amount of data transfer(for eg. 3GB) a day for each student.
Reply 1590
If they allowed 3Gb day that would be pretty good anyways. But interesting question really. In regards to using a phone, I guess you can use a split (ethernet and phone line). Does anyone know what the line rental is, how much it would cost to call landlines and mobiles? Basically, would it be cheaper than a mobile?

Oh, and is there anything stopping you from getting a "private"internet connection, so basically going to a company like BT, Orange, Virgin and buying broadband through them?
If I were to apply for accommodation but find private accommodation before the year begins, am I allowed to not go into the place they have allocated me? Or is it a contract, similar to your UCAS app?

I'll be a first year undergrad.
Also how long did it take for the reciept to come. I hand delivered mine and they wouldn't give me one

Mine came back pretty sharpish... A week or so later...

What does anyone think to the idea of buying private broadband (e.g. O2, virgin, etc)?

I would not bother; don't think its ever possible in the halls
Why would you want a private connection anyway? You would have to end up paying a lot to get it's speed anywhere near to what most unis have. And it's usually a pain in the ass when their connection drops and needing to contact them of it does, and whatever.

I've heard that if the halls phoneline is managed by a company like BT then it can be done. Can anyone please confirm whether any of the houses are run like this?
Random question, butting in on current conversation,

What is it like in Francis Gardner? Good social life? Many Hall parties or anything? sociable people? Any photos of rooms?

I.E. general advice/opinions please

thank you (:
