recommended first year accomodation? Uni of Leicester

i start in september and i was just wondering which accomodation is the best/most convenient for a first year whether that be costs, social aspects etc.
Hi!

I'm a first year student at Leicester. I don't know what you've seen in open days or in brochures etc, but I would highly recommend living in Oadby Student Village- I live there and it's really brilliant. It's very social, there's always a huge amount of events going on and if you're anything like me then it will remind you of home- it's quiet and very leafy. The main drawback of Oadby is getting to Uni- it's a roughly 35 minute walk or 25 minute bus journey. You can buy a bus pass with either Arriva or the University Shuttle bus service.

I can only speak from what I know, and I am very biased, but I can highly recommend the accomodation I am staying in now, Bowder Court. It's a self-catered, ensuite room and it is truly wonderful. The kitchen is huge- all 6 of us can be in there at the same time and there is space for all of us. The kitchens come with an island and ample fridge and cupboard space which is amazing. In terms of the rooms, the desk is absolutely massive; to put it into perspective, I can lie on the desk with no problems! The only drawback is that Bowder is one of the more expensive options, costing around £150/pw this year.

I am familiar with the Pavillions accomodation as well; the kitchens are noticeably smaller than in Bowder and I think it would be cramped for 6 people to fit in. The rooms themselves are nice and are also ensuite. I think it may also be a tad cheaper than Bowder, but don't quote me on that!

If you have any questions please don't hesitate to ask, I can always enquire with friends if you have questions about other accomodation too.

Good luck!
Jake

sorry to jump onto somebody else's post, but i'm also trying to choose which Oadby halls to go for and was leaning towards John Foster but have heard that there are only 4/5 people per flat and I think i might find that too small - do you know if it's true?
Hi,I'm a first year student and I live in one of the City Living residences. I would highly recommend city living rather than Oadby Village for several reasons. Oadby is a 15/20 min bus ride from campus, around a 40 min walk. This may not sound bad to you now but the bus ticket prices are very expensive and most people I know that live there hate having to commute! Whereas I'm a 10 minute walk down the road from campus which makes it much easier and cheaper to get there. Living in Oadby also makes it much more expensive if you're going into town for nights out or just in general, a taxi to Oadby can be pretty expensive but an Uber to where I am is usually around £4.Personally I liked the city living rooms more as they're a lot more modern and updated than the ones in Oadby. The only downside I would say is that you're not strictly with first year students, so you may be in a flat with second/third years but this isn't the case a lot of the time, they tend to put you with first years. If you're heavily looking for the social aspect with other first years then Oadby is the best choice, but when I was looking for accommodation no-one told me it was much more convenient and a lot cheaper to stay in City Living!! For me I was willing to compromise a small part of the typical 'first year experience' to save a lot of money and be a 5-10 min walk from everything.

Hi Jake,

I have firmed my Leicester offer and am looking at accommodation. I really liked the look of Bowder but I saw that there wasn't any Gilbert Murray Hall specific social space like there is for Beaumont Hall, for example. Would you say that is an issue at all? Do you have any thoughts on Beaumont?

Thanks in advance.

Ben.

Hello!
I know this post was 4 years ago now but I have just accepted my offer at UOL to start in september this year. I am looking at accomadation and from my research I think living in the student village would be ideal for me (I am very social and would prefer to be with other first years). However, I have no clue which halls in the villiage are best. Bowder court seems very good but is very expensive. Is there any slightly cheaper halls in the villiage that are also good (not too small/crowded etc). I don't mind not having an en-suite as it seems to be out of budget and I would rather be living in a bigger group than a smaller one.
What would you reccomend?
Thanks
Daisy

Hi! I was also looking at Bowder court and thought it look quite lovely! In terms of wifi (if you get it included) is it a shared wifi or does everyone get their private one? Also how is the bathroom like in terms of the look and also the shower? Thanks!!

Hi!

I'm currently in bowder, the WiFi is pretty good. It's ASK4, and everyone has their own login, I think it's probably shared but no one's really mentioned it.

There are plenty of other options in the village as well, including townhouses and other halls (Lasdun, Pavilions, Glebe and Knighton)

The rooms are really nice, being bery large and then having the bed tucked in on the side next to the the bathroom. The bathrooms are just a toilet and a shower, the shower is on the small side with the curtain, but it's easy to work and is consistently warm.

What do you think of Opal Court? I got the 7K a year one I think the price for performance is pretty good? Also I think the rooms looked really nice? Also do u think I could still socialize even if I am in private halls?

Hello!
Private halls stills mean you can socialise imo. Just make sure to join some society’s and socialise in those since everyone has common interests as well!
