Joining engineering societies as a foundation year student

I’m about to start at the uni of Sheffield to study mechanical engineering with a foundation year. I’m interested in joining some subject related societies eg. engineers without borders, but would they still accept me as a foundation year student with limited knowledge of the subject?
Totally fine, there will be plenty of first years who are in the same position as you so you might as well get a head start.

I would say that there is a pretty big learning curve for these kinds of engineering societies so don't be discouraged if you find you can't always keep up. EWB is probably a bit better on this front though.
Thanks!
