Ive heard petrol cars are generally easier to drive because you can rely on the clutch a bit more.

It's diesels that are easier to drive. Diesels have more Torque making them harder to stall, at the tradeoff of losing upper end performance compaired to petrol.
All Internal Combustion Engines, regardless of fuel type can be controlled via engine braking.
