Hello everyone, I am a current a MSc. Cyber Security student at University of Plymouth and here as a representative to answer all your queries regarding postgraduate studies and university in general. Here is a quick take about the current teaching mode in University of Plymouth.

This year has been tough on all of us, but I would like to point out how the university has been teaching through this. I will be honest, online classes does not sound convincing considering the quality of teaching expected, but University of Plymouth’s implementation combining services such as zoom, and Microsoft teams allows for a seamless experience not too far from face-to-face learning. The lecturers understand that the situation is not ideal and do try their best to make classes as interactive as possible. Also, remote access to lab computers is a great tool for all practical courses. This removes the requirement for students to spend on powerful computers for some specific software.

Course assessments I found to be very well thought out and adapted to online learning. Increasing emphasis on coursework rather than examinations works very well for us students studying online. My course is 100% assessed through coursework with zero invigilated examinations. This information went way more than I would like to admit towards finally making Plymouth my firm choice. This will be specified on the program handbook available on the course webpage, do have a look if you are considering applying for a course.

I believe that we are at the tail end of the restrictions, things will only get better going forward. Keep an eye on the university website for up-to-date information regarding Covid-19 and its impact. Feel free to contact me any way you feel comfortable if you have any queries at all.

Best Wishes,
Shashwat University of Plymouth, Postgraduate Student Rep.
Hi everyone,
I hope everyone is enjoying their week so far and looking forward to a relaxing weekend. :burnout:

The University of Plymouth has a lot of societies and sports clubs. This is where I found my home in the Tropical Island Society (TIS). Being an international student from the Caribbean and coming to England to live by myself was very scary but TIS really made it feel less scary. TIS really made me feel like I was back home with my family. I love the atmosphere and the people are very welcoming, it was almost like they are my cousins and we grew up together. I honestly am really glad I found TIS because I found a family...My family.

England can be a bit gloomy but Plymouth is by far my favorite city because it is always bright. Rain or Shine, windy or cold, Plymouth or better known as Britain’s Ocean City is home to some breath-taking views with lots of fresh, sea air. I love going to the Hoe and the Waterfront especially on days where I miss the beaches back at home and just need some time to think. I love how close everything is in Plymouth. It is a walking town so it is easily accessible to all. As far as things to do in the city, whether you are ice skating with friends or going to the bowling alley or going out to the many local pubs, restaurants, and nightclubs to get your social life intact, you will never be bored. We also now have a cinema with the full 4D experience and let me just say...it is really amazing. Plymouth has something for everyone to enjoy.

All in all, I love my experience thus far in Plymouth. It has really taught me to be independent, to try new things and if I had the chance to do it over, I definitely would choose Plymouth University again because the things you learn in this university are unlike any other.

Barcode/Drake Circus:

One of the great perks about University of Plymouth is that it’s opposite Drake Circus Shopping Centre, which is filled with student-friendly shops where you’re sure to be able to pick up some great discounts and deals and there’s also restaurants on top! But for more choice there is the Barcode, a recently developed structure filled with restaurants that are ideal if you’re not feeling up to cooking! The barcode also has a mini-golf course as well, with two different routes you can take, which is a fun way to get to know your course mates and your flatmates in a more informal manner rather than in a classroom!

Coming from quite a rural area, where the nearest shopping centre is half hour away by car, it is definitely beneficial having something like Drake Circus so close! Whenever I ran out of pens, or paper, even ink, and couldn’t wait for an Amazon delivery to arrive, it’s useful to be able to literally cross the road and find a shop that has everything you need!

Another ideal aspect about Drake Circus is that around once or twice a year, they hold a Student Nights Only, where there are incredible discounts that you can pick up! Especially as you may refrain latter in the year to budget, this is an event I would highly recommend going to because even if you have no intentions of buying anything, sometimes the deals are just that good, you don’t want to miss out! Especially when it comes to stationary, as Paperchase can be expensive to a student, this event is ideal to stock up, even if you don’t necessarily need all the pens or notebooks just yet!

What I love about Plymouth:

I've been at the University of Plymouth for three years and I haven't regretted my decision since! Not only is the university incredibly helpful with different kinds of areas, like mental health and the writing cafe to assist you in your essays, but the area itself is so easy to fall in love!

As Britain's ocean city, it was certainly ideal for me to study history as I have a passion for naval history, but being so close to the ocean is one of the great things about Plymouth! There are plenty of spaces around the Hoe where you can sit by the sea on a warm day! One of my favourite things about the Hoe and the barbican is that you are spoilt for choice on restaurants and cafes, and one of my favourite places is Captain Jasper's, a burger shack that is right by the harbour! I would highly recommend visiting as it's a great place to take a break from student life, and it also works for a student budget as well! There are also plenty of ice cream shops as well, which is ideal for those warm days!

Plymouth is also not far from Cornwall so you're never too far from the beach either, which on a nice day it's a lovely way to spend the day! Especially coming from a rural area where the nearest beach is over an hour away!

Uni Facilities:

University of Plymouth has plenty of facilities that are just there to take advantage of! The library which is a must for all students is ideal for checking out books, or using the printers, but it’s also an ideal area to spend your day when you have an essay coming up! There are plenty of areas for you to go and study, whether you have a table by yourself, a booth with your friends or even a bookable study room to get some more peace and quiet! There’s a café that is present in the library, which is again ideal for spending the day there as they often offer a hot drink and wrap/sandwich deal, but there’s also cakes on offer as well if you’re searching for that sugar rush!

There are plenty more cafes around the campus as well, such as in Portland Square Building, which offers a pizza deal! It’s ideal because the price of food and drink is ideal for students, and it means you may not have to go to Tesco’s or Sainsbury’s for a meal deal, when Plymouth University offers one much cheaper, and it means you never have to leave the campus!

Another ideal facility is that most of the campus buildings offer a study area, so if you’re not quite looking for an area where you have to work in the peace and quiet, but want to get out of your room, these areas are ideal as it means that you still have that element of socialising but also in a place where you can really focus on your work!

The University also offers help and support as well for your writing. If you’re not feeling quite confident with your writing, whether structure or grammar, the Writing Café is a great place for you to go to, and speak to peers about your work, who understand the possible insecurities you feel about your work, and will go out of their way to help you feel more confident and to develop your writing as well. I made the mistake of not attending until the end of my first year and it is something that I regret as I feel my writing would have improved much more quickly! The fact that you’re meeting with peers, whether it’s students from different years or subjects, it is less scary meeting with them than perhaps your lecturers, as the writing mentors understand from a student perspective as they’ve been there themselves.

Happy to help answer any questions!

Making Friends:

Hi everyone!

Starting university in an area that you're not familiar with can be scary, and overwhelming, especially if you don't know anybody yet! One of the great things about Plymouth is that they hold so many events throughout the year, and not just in fresher's, that it's easy to start making friends whenever! My top tip for your first night in Plymouth is definitely to start getting to know your flatmates. Usually there's loads of packing to do, and I know I had loads to do, but it's important to get to know the people that you'll be living with for the next year so you want to make a good start and impression, and it certainly helps if you're starting to feel homesick, which I certainly was!

Another way of making friends is through attending any fresher's events that you think are suited to you; whether it's the part-time job fair, the society fair, the events that the SU can hold, as it means that you also make friends outside of your flatmates which is equally important as you want to be able to have a wide circle of friends, and that you don't just hang out with your flatmates! Although there's nothing wrong with that, because you're living together, sometimes you'll find yourself just wanting a bit of space, which I know I did! The hall residence's in Plymouth are perfect for this because they're situated in a way that you get to know those in other flats, in other blocks as well!

Finally, getting to know your course mates! This is equally important as you'll be spending the next three years with them and they can be your study or revision partners, somebody to talk with if you can't grasp a concept or a certain event that you're learning about, and it means that you're not alone on your course, which can be quite daunting at first as it is a new way of learning for some! Having friends on the course means that you're more likely to be open about talking in front of them in class and even during presentations, as it means you're not presenting to a bunch of strangers!

If you have any questions, please don't hesitate to ask!

Hi!

One of the best things about studying in Plymouth is the area! There is always so much going on that you're never bored, whether it's an event at the university or an event just in the area!

For instance, this weekend has been a weekend of activities dedicated to pirates! With pirate cocktails, to quizzes and there's activities for everyone! Check out the link below to see how they've adapted to the current social distancing guidelines!

https://www.visitplymouth.co.uk/whats-on/major-events/virtual-plymouth-pirates-weekend

This is just one type of weekend that the area offers that makes Plymouth such a unique place to study!

- Alys, undergraduate rep of the University of Plymouth
The Writing Cafe:

The Writing Cafe is an aspect that is unique to Plymouth. It's a support system for students struggling with their essays, personal statements, and applications. It's an informal session where you can meet with peers from different disciplines who can help you improve your essays or anything that you think you might be struggling with.

Despite the pandemic, the university has ensured that the Writing Cafe is still accessible to students on zoom where you would enter a breakout room with a peer and still discuss your work. This is just one of the many support systems that the University of Plymouth has to offer you.

I've worked at the Writing Cafe for two years and it's an incredible service which I've used myself. I've helped with essay planning, I've helped with grammar, looking at your evaluation skills and helping with references, and many more! Students have found the service beneficial as they discuss their work with a peer, rather than a lecturer, so it's a lot more informal and less scary. I know when I first started at the university, I was afraid of meeting with lecturers at first because it can seem intimidating, but the Writing Cafe provided me with the support to be more confident in not just writing my essays but also articulating my ideas to my lecturers as well.

If you have any more questions about the Writing Cafe, I'm happy to answer and this link will provide even more information for you: https://www.plymouth.ac.uk/student-life/magazine/issue-2/welcome-to-the-writing-cafe

Plymouth not only hosts a fantastic seaside location, vibrant and exciting nightlife, and creativity around every corner, it also boasts being the 7th most affordable city to study at in the UK! 🏖️

Offering great support from the Accomodations Page with a large number of close to campus halls of residence, you'll never feel alone when it comes to making those big decisions. 🏠🏙️

Fun in the City:
There are plenty of fun and affordable days out in Plymouth. Notable spots include the Box - a free museum with a large number of exhibits ranging from Natural History, Local History, and Arts & Culture. From just £2 the water taxis down by the Mayflower Steps are a quick and exciting way to get between Plymouth's Barbican to Mount Batten, and from the Barbican to the Royal William Yard and Mount Edgecumbe. You'll never be stuck for somewhere to eat in Plymouth, with the indoor market and surrounding area hosting a wide variety of eateries from a diverse array of countries and cultures. 🚢🍲🥳

Sunshine and Seaside:
With the sea on your doorstep (if you're lucky, literally!) and the sun in the sky, there is nothing better than sitting on the Hoe or down by Plymouth Sound with friends and a BBQ. In summer, there isn't a day that goes by when you won't bump into students from the University of Plymouth sharing laughs by the sea, with music and the smell of sizzling food filling the air. The sea is so inviting that people swim every single month of the year, and who can blame them with the clear blue water winking up in the sunshine? ☀️🌊

We'd love to hear what YOU love to do in Plymouth. What cheap eateries have you discovered? And where is the best bar for a night out on a budget?

Feeling safe in Plymouth!

As an international student, I feel like it is important you look at how safe the city you want to choose for your studies is. It is my second year in the UK. I have been to many places in the country. However, I can say that my experience in Plymouth has been fairly positive. One of the things I looked into when choosing During summer holiday, I used to take a 30-minutes walk back to my place around 2 o'clock in the morning. I am glad I have chosen to live in such a safe place. As someone who cycles to everyone, this was important for me to be able to go anywhere anytime without having to worry about my safety. In fact, Plymouth is rated as one of the top five safest cities in the UK.

UPSU- University of Plymouth's Student Union!

Hey everyone!

The UPSU (Plymouth's Student Union) has some great facilities, events, and societies for students to get involved with!

The SU offers regular events ranging from club nights (even having D!ck and Dom DJ during Fresher's week!), Fresher's Fairs, tote bag making and other crafts, and film nights to name a few! The campus market is run often on the SU roof and offers students the chance to grab a bite to eat from local vendors, such as bao buns and sweet treats, as well as hosting local business like plant stalls where you can pick up a new plant pal for your accommodation! :h:

As well as this, the SU run the annual Summer Ball where students can get tickets to listen to a range of music (previously including Chase and Status last year!) alongside fairground rides, bars, and more to celebrate the end of a great year in Plymouth!

Student-led societies are run through the UPSU and offer a range of communities to be a part of, whether you're interested in music, movies, sports, gaming, or more, there is bound to be a group waiting for you to join and fit right in! I've been a part of the marine biology, environmental, and scuba societies :scuba: and can confirm they have a great range of events run throughout the year for you to get involved with, from crafts, to nights out, games nights, and cruises off into the Plymouth Sound!

Take a look at our SU's list of societies here: https://www.upsu.com/studentgroups/browse/
Are there any that you're thinking of joining? If not, why not make one of your own! UPSU supports students to even create their own student groups to find your student-family in Plymouth and people with similar interests to you!

Check out the UPSU website to find out more about the facilities on our campus (including fantastic shops, bars, and food) as well as the events they run and see what how you can make it count here in Britain's Ocean City! https://www.upsu.com

Let us know if you have any more questions and reach out if you want to know more about the UPSU or anything about Plymouth in general!

Hey everyone!

Hope you're all having a great week 😀

I thought I'd share my top 3 things about about both the university and city to give some insight as to why I chose Plymouth for my degree 🙂

Favourite things about the uni:

1) The location! Being just a few minutes walk from a huge shopping centre, the sea, restaurants, cafés, and entertainment venues is so perfect for students and I rarely have to walk more than 15 minutes to get anywhere I need to go!

2) The facilities! When looking around the campus on an open day, I just loved the modern facilities, study spaces, and lecture halls. I think it definitely has a positive impact on my learning when I'm studying somewhere vibrant, new, and with a good atmosphere and the uni ticks all of these boxes for me, especially the library, labs, and marine station.

3) The SU and student experience! The UPSU puts on some amazing events all year round and caters activities to students with varied interests, from sports events, to nightclubs, arts sessions, and movie nights just to name a few. There is definitely a great student experience here at Plymouth and getting involved with as many activities as you can has a great positive impact on your student life.

Favourite things about the city:

1) The nature! Being a Zoology student, nature is an important part of my course, but it's also beneficial to spend time outdoors for wellbeing and taking time out of your studies. Being so close to Dartmoor and the Plymouth Sound National Marine Park has been so great throughout my time at the university and I wouldn't want to be anywhere else in the world to study!

2) The nightlife! There are some great spots here in the city, whether you're into that vibrant late-night nightclub lifestyle, or more into a nice quiet bite to eat and games evening, there's plenty in Plymouth to help you wind down at the end of a busy day! You can expect to find cinemas, clubs, games venues, mini golf, pubs, bars, and restaurants all within a few minutes walk from the uni.

3) The convenience! Being a student, peace of mind and ease is a top priority when thinking about my lifestyle and where I want to be living. Plymouth has all the convenience of a student city but without being too busy, loud or crowded. Plus, it's got some great access to local nature spots, as well as shops and a range of budget-friendly supermarkets. You can also catch trains and coaches easily from the city stations to get to places like Bristol and London in no time.

Have you had a chance to visit Plymouth yet? If so, what did you think? Let us know!

If not, we'll have more upcoming open days and offer holder days in the new year so keep an eye out on our website for those...

Hope to see you in Plymouth next year! 🙂
