Suggest some summer reading!

Subject to me receiving three As in a few weeks on results day then I will hopefully be studying History at the University of Bristol from October. I'm not too worried that they haven't provided us with a reading list yet but I do want to ensure I'm reading throughout summer. I was hoping that a second/third year student might suggest about ten to twenty books (concerning any period/event in history) just to keep me going over summer.

To give you an idea of what quality I've been reading recently then here's my last five books:

Twelve Days by Victory Sebestyen
British Politics 1918-64 by Macfarlane
Ordinary Men by Christopher Browning
Arguments for Socialism by Tony Benn
Mao: The Unknown Storry by Jung Chang

OP
I'm just doing V100 History but I anticipate that as soon as I'm given the option then I'll specialise in late-modern political history. However, I'm keen to read a range of things as I'm aware that I'll probably have to pick ancient and medieval units next year.
blair's wars is a good book
i wanted to start reading politic stuff so i got that
and politics a very short introduction
and the tories (by alan clarke i think)

however im going to specialise (sp?) in medieval so ive read alot of dyer and postan
hope that helped

I would read something general - there's no point specialising if you don't know what your course is going to involve...

Try 'Europe Since Napoleon', by David Thomson, and The Age of Empire, The Age of Capital and The Age of Extremes, all by Hobsbawn.
Alasdair
The Age of Extremes, all by Hobsbawn.

second that:yep:
