Hi everyone, this thread has been so intresting. I live in kent and dont really have anyone to discuss such issues with, (apart from my mum). I dont have a routine. i just like to tie up my hair at night and make sure its well oiled. Thank u for the information on the mineral oil, as ive now thrown away my products and going shopping 2moro for new products.

Every since i turned 19 and started uni, ive started to wear weaves. Untill then i never permed or did anything apart from braiding it.

I just want to know everyones opinon of braids on older women. Please dont take this the wrong way but for me i just dont see braids belonging to a professional women. Im in my second year and so gonna b applying for placements etc, and i just dont see it belonging on professional women. But i like the low maintaince of braids lol. Im never pleased lol

Howdoo :hello: Glad your finding this thread helpful/useful.

I don't know if you know but there is a forum called the 'Black Hair Media' and the ladies in there are extremely helpful.
I have started a whole new regimen (routine) to get my hair healthy with the advice from the ladies. I also bought myself new hair products (which don't contain petrolatum, placenta and mineral oil), using new hair styles, ie, fony pony, putting hair into claw clips, I NEVER wear it down now and I also wrap my hair at night (which has done my ends the world of good in the space of 6days).

Definately visit that forum/website as I have found it very useful and also go onto youtube - there are sooo many people on there giving tips about black hair care and etc, ie check out Lorraine Tips, she is soo good - there is another girl as well, but I can't remember her name.

As for the braids, I have seen women with braids in who are professionals. So long as you take good care of them, ie neat, clean and etc, then I can't see a problem with it.

Hope you find that helpful

You sound exaactly like me! Lol i only started with weaves at uni.
I also queried the professionalism of braids; i think pick and drop braids can look really nice-if they are not too big obviously-this is where only an inch or so is braid and the remainder of the extension is just left out.

I normal wear a scarf and a net to sleep-but quite often i'll be spending the night with other people who aren't black so don't get itlol-not in that way, like sleep overs and i feel to embarrassed to put a scarf on-A relationship with a non black guy did horrors to my hair + weave-the knots!

Yea I dont add my nightly props on when im staying round a friends house - I answered my front door once with a pair of tights on my head, to my horror it being my mate, who answered me with ''WTF are you doing'' . . .:o: - no matter how much I tried to explain it was for my hair, it fell on deaf ears lol :o:

Don't you get a really bad itchy scalp from the weave? . . I remember when I had the braids when I was like 10/11 and my god, talk about itch - no matter how much/many times I sprayed my scalp was still itching like crazy.

See with braids when your scalp itches-u can't scratch too much cause it'll mess up your hair! But with a weave you can scratch and scratch cause your roots are hidden-but i don't remember having an itchy scalp with my last set of tracks-i just made sure i kept my roots moisturised.
No my hair doesnt get unbearably ichy

My hair does not get itchy with weave, I personally think it is the best way to grow your hair. My hair has got a lot thicker and longer ever since wearing weaves. I've had my weave for almost three months and it doesnt itch.

How is your hair growing going? . . what is your regimen (routine) ?

My hair growth is just past my shoulders. It tends to grow quite slowly and then i'm having to contend with breakage/shedding.

I was just beginning to get into a regime but i find it so complicated! Once I get back to the UK i wanna get into it properly. I use ORS carrot oil and have used the olive oil products.

I've been using a clarifying shampoo immediately followed by a conditioning shampoo, so getting rid of the oil and buildup in my hair and then replacing some of the moisture. Once thing I have found is that some of the products recommended on forums aren't available in the UK that i've found, and thats annoying! Luckily i'm from London and there are lots of shops around but in Southampton its not even worth it. What they do have is ridiculously overpriced..

Go onto Black Hair Media, click on the hair forum - and it'll lead you to lots of useful advice to making your hair grow faster, healthier and longer!

Good Luck

Oo i do use that site but not as often as I should. It is very useful though. And its a real shame that there isn't more information about black hair care in the UK. I'm going to the states after I finish my placement and plan to stock up on hair products big time!

Lol my boyfriend is white and I know what you mean. He is used to it now. He likes my hair long and i'm trying to grow it (for me I might add!), so i've explained that i caneither have no hair and no scarf in bed or a scarf and potentially nice hair.

I'm away on placement abroad at the moment with a friend and we're sharing a room. She didn't comment on my scarf at all but a guy that was there was very amused. Ain't nobody gonna stop me wearing a scarf!
I personally don't wear scarves/tights or do the silk thing at night because somehow, they always end up on the floor and I henna my hair so would hate stained silk! My bf is english and he absolutely loves the bed hair I get..and I tell you, I get some freaky bed hair, so it's all good. I think once you explain to your bfs, they will understand the effort it takes to have your hair the way it is. I told mine and he's always asking how my hair is doing and when next I'll be in braids lol

I really wish I could get into a routine and stick with it, and I've tried and I'm lazy lol

For those of you who are finding it hard to find hair products, like I've been saying, check out nappturality.com. There are english girl on there who are more than willing to help and in their product lists, you will find things that are highly recommended that you'll be able to find over here.

Yea I like the ORS range, hair smells sooo nice after the long winded regimen i have started lol  (but hopefully it'll be worth it).

OMG Tell me about it - I have seen soooo many products over the past few days on BHS,, I think ''YEA, I want that'', go to Asda or the black hair shops in the overpriced Gloucester town I live in, and they either haven't heard of it, tell me there is no such product or they sell it but its far too expensive - why o why is black hair care products sooooooooooo damn expensive? . . its soooo freaking annoying. ARGHHH:woo: :woo: :woo: :woo: :woo: :woo:

Im off to the States next year so I too will be stocking up on loads of hair products. As sad as this sounds, im quite excited, being surrounded by a large array of products lol  *ok now I really do sound sad* :o: lol

How long does relaxed hair last for?
LOL i will. Im going to paris soon tho. Do u think they will have products in paris?
not in everyday shops i imagine fungirl, you'll probably need to go to specialist shops.
rye relaxed hair can last for anything up to a month to 3 months..that's if you mean how long it takes before you get mini baby curls coming out at the roots again. it depends on how fast the person's hair grows.

Mine lasts for 6-7 weeks, the sides is where I start to see the afro curls poking through . . .:ninjagirl:, although im on this new regimen so going to try and stretch to 8weeks (looking after it v well to avoid as much breakage as possible).
