Hi! I was just wondering, does Keele uses cadavers to study anatomy?

Hi!

Just to chip in, I'm in my final year of biomedical science at Keele and I've had the opportunity to use the anatomy suite in David Weatherall (the medical school building). For my anatomy and physiology module we got to hold brains and see the spinal cord from the cadavers that were there at the time, so I know they definitely do use cadavers at Keele to aid in teaching students. Speaking to medical students, they also use the cadavers semi-frequently, but far more than the biomeds.

I hope this helps!

Hi!

I am a student at Keele University in my 2nd year of Adult Nursing.

I am also a Student Ambassador for the university so I thought it might be a nice idea to set up this thread so people can ask questions easily!

So, fire away!

hi, could you sum up what a global challenge pathway actually is and if the modules are worth taking instead of the other optional modules related to your course? thanks

Hi!

Global challenge pathways are, in essence, electives. Students who are eligible to take them can do so alongside their core degree programme in order to complement and enhance their studies at Keele. They're designed to allow you to engage with a 'global challenge', connecting your degree studies directly to societal issues and often giving you the opportunity to work with students, staff, and research partners from different subject areas.

You can find out more about global challenge pathways at https://www.keele.ac.uk/study/undergraduate/globalchallengepathways/ but, in essence, they're one way (although certainly not the only way) to enhance your degree programme.

Depending on your interests and career goals, some of the pathways might offer particular opportunities to develop and showcase skills that will be beneficial upon graduation. If you're keen to work overseas, for example, the Languages and Intercultural Awareness pathway enables you to either specialise in a language, develop skills to teach English as a Foreign Language, or examine language, culture and identity.

They also allow students to utilise skills leant on their degree programme in areas they are passionate about. For example, if you're interested in environmental sustainability, the Climate Change and Sustainability pathway may see you working with international partners to explore climate change and sustainability in different international contexts; lead your own projects to drive real change in your communities; or even be part of educating others to help achieve a more sustainable future.

Whether it's worth taking a global challenge pathway really depends on your interests and how you hope to use your degree in the future. They certainly offer a lot of scope for both interdisciplinary learning and showcasing your skills but they're not the only way to enhance your degree at Keele. Our Careers and Employability Service, for example, offer internships, whilst there are also volunteering opportunities and opportunities for language learning, and many modules offer work placement options.

Hope that helps!

Hello, do you mind if I ask you questions about nursing?I am a first year nursing student at the University of Wolverhampton but I am looking at other options. What is the timetable like at Keele? How many days a week do you attend? And at what stage of the year do you do placements? At my university we attend 4 days a week in the mornings and we don't start placements until February. Many thanks 😊

Hi @Maria.Sierra,

I'm not a nursing student myself so I'm afraid I don't know the exact course structure. However you could have a chat via Unibuddy with Mrs Emma Collins, who is one of our staff members within the School of Nursing and Midwifery. You can chat to her via https://api.unibuddy.co/og/keele-university/buddies/staff/5eeb62cb8c954405f1c2ea66. Sarah Lewis, the lead midwife for Education within the School, is also available to chat with via https://api.unibuddy.co/og/keele-university/buddies/staff/5f6b4e746ab71c04b0561175.

Hope that helps!

Is there anyone in Horwood block g that would like to swap and move to Horwood block d?
Did any international students take biochemistry with a foundation year? I was told by the admissions team early this month after waiting for my pre-cas email this course no longer exists at keele university after I was accepted 5 months ago, but as far as I can see its still up for application on UCAS and keeles website?

Hi @concernedcorn,

I believe that a number of our Foundation Year and Pre-Sessional programmes are now being run through the university's partnership with Keele University International College (KUIC - https://kuic.keele.ac.uk/). I'm not sure of the exact status of each programme at present - and I can see that Foundation Year entry for 2023 is still showing on our website and UCAS as you've said - so I'll query this with our admissions team and get back to you once I can clarify matters.

Hi @concernedcorn

Further to my message above, I've heard back from my colleagues. They've confirmed that the majority of our Foundation Year and pre-sessional programmes for international students are now being run through Keele University International College (KUIC).

Keele University do still offer some Foundation Year programmes for home (i.e., UK) students, which is why you will still see these being advertised on UCAS and via our website.

Hope that helps to clarify but, if you have any other questions, please get in touch

Hi Anon,

We have specialist Disability and Dyslexia Support Advisors available through Student Services who are there to support students with access to their studies and the wider university experience.

You can find details on how to contact them - and options for booking a virtual appointment with an advisor - via our website at https://www.keele.ac.uk/students/lifeoutsideofstudy/disabilityanddyslexiasupport/. There's also information about the support on offer to current students at https://www.keele.ac.uk/students/lifeoutsideofstudy/disabilityanddyslexiasupport/supportforcurrentstudents/, and for applicants at https://www.keele.ac.uk/students/lifeoutsideofstudy/disabilityanddyslexiasupport/thinkingofcomingtokeele.

If you'd prefer to speak to someone in person, there are also DDS drop-in sessions at Student Services (which is located inside the Tawney Building on Keele's main campus) on Tuesdays 5-7pm, Wednesdays10am-12pm and 2-4pm, and Thursdays 5-7pm.

Hope that helps!

Hi there, I am a first year mature student doing adult nursing. In one of your replies I learned that you took maternity leave on your first year. I was wondering what process you had to go through and how long was the leave for. Also do you need to apply for student loan all over again?

Hi @Nephophile04,

Unfortunately that was post was made by my colleague, who had the PG ambassador account before me, so it's not something I have personal experience of.

However the University does offer support to students who are pregnant or require a leave of absence due to pregnancy and maternity. The best people to get in touch with are Student Services (https://www.keele.ac.uk/students/studentservices/) who will be happy to offer all relevant support needed during the pregnancy, including information about student finance.

Student Services also provide additional support for student parents (https://www.keele.ac.uk/students/lifeoutsideofstudy/supportingourdiversecommunity/studentparents/), and can help you as you transition back into your studies.

There's contact details for the Student Services team at https://www.keele.ac.uk/students/contactus/, or you can pop into see them in the Tawney Building on campus.

Hope that helps!
