Hi, can anyone tell me which of the blocks (with ensuite rooms) in Ranmoor are the nicest and also not too loud? Also where abouts are there banks, a launderette and supermarkets? Thanks

Hi,
I guess my question would be directed towards Daniel as he has a year abroad in his course. I have an offer for Mechanical Engineering with a year abroad in North America, and I am very curious as to how the study abroad system works. Do they tell you where you're going, or give you a selection, or you just choose?

Hi there,

Congratulations on your offer! What usually happens is your department will give you a list of host universities that you can go to (i.e. there were North American universities I could have gone to but I chose to only apply to those in Australia and New Zealand).

You will probably have a choice of a list of universities, then you rank them in order of preference. You put in an application to the Global Opportunities Team telling them why you want to go to a particular university, and whether or not you get your chosen place will likely depend on your first year grades & motivation for selecting that university.

I hope this helps but if you have any further questions feel free to ask!

Hey!

There are some maps you can download here where you can see the placement of each building and block and there's a little t-shirt icon to mark where the laundrettes are. I've personally lived in Endcliffe in my first year, which is very close to Ranmoor and from my own experience and what I've heard from friends, Ranmoor is normally not very loud anyway. There will always be some people who might wanna throw a party on a Friday night, but you can't prevent that by choosing a particular block unfortunately. There's a chance that if you're closer to the main road it might be a bit louder because there would be cars driving by, but otherwise it should be fine!

About the banks and supermarkets, the nearest supermarket is a Morrison's on Fulwood Road (which you can see on the map linked above too), which is quite close, and there's a Sainsbury's right next to it which has an ATM, too. There might also be an ATM in the Ridge, but I'm not entirely sure, there was one in the Edge (which is in Endcliffe). All the banks tend to be closer to the city centre, but I think there's a Barclays nearby and you can easily get to Ecclesall Road where there are a lot of shops, cafes, restaurants, and banks, too.

Let me know if you have any other questions, I'd be happy to help!

Hey Andreea,
Thanks for your reply. Those maps are super helpful! It's also good to know about the local banks and supermarkets.
I was also wondering how easy it is to get jobs on campus and what types of jobs they would be? Thanks

Hi!

Just to add into what Andreea has covered here, I stayed in Kinder apartments in Ranmoor and personally really enjoyed staying there. The apartments themselves are basically the exact same in all the blocks of Ranmoor (and some of Endcliffe too). I didn't have really any problems with noise also, like Andreea said there will inevitably be some noise from parties but I found Ranmoor was quieter than Endcliffe on the general! The shops Andreea has recommended are the closest to the accommodation and the easiest to shop at, there is also a market at the moor called 'the moor market' which is really good for fresh produce from local businesses!

Job wise, there are quite a lot of opportunities for student jobs on campus, I personally work as a student ambassador which gives opportunities to help at open days and on platforms like this talking to prospective students! There are also jobs working in the cafes, receptions or libraries across campus as well as roles as mentors! The Uni pay students really well and I find working for the Uni is a really nice job so I highly recommend seeing what's available when you get to uni, we use an internal job site called 'Jobshop'.

Hope this helps you out a bit, if you have any more questions please feel free to ask:smile:

Hi Alisha,

Thanks for the info. I actually ended up just booking a room in Endcliffe as there wasn't very many rooms available/anything suitable in Ranmoor. Now I'm worried Endlcliffe is too loud!

About the jobs, that sounds great. I'm super eager about getting a job and if it is on campus then that's even better! You say they pay well? Is it more than minimum wage? And is it term time only? Sorry for so many questions! Thanks so much

Hi! I’m an international student, joining in September for MA International Relations and East Asia. I need to apply for accommodation and im a little torn between uni accommodation vs private.

Mappin (City) and Ravenstones Apartments are the most economically viable but I am unable to find any information on these. No pictures, reviews etc. Could you please help? Any idea about these?

It’s very sociable (especially the flats of 10), nice grounds, has tennis courts and table tennis table. I’ve really liked it in Crewe flats, had clean flatmates and found that the shared bathroom was fine. It’s about a 5 minute walk from the other endcliffe flats and the edge.

Hello! I have received masters offer from Sheffield University Management School for Logistics and Supply Chain Management. Do anyone have any idea about this program and how’s the curriculum and content? And, how’s the Uni’s ties with industry? Also, I would like to know which among Newcastle and Sheffield are better for international students when it comes to cost of living, finding part-time jobs?

Hello!

Congratulations on your Masters offer that's great ! Unfortunately I don't know anything about the management school and the course, and I don't believe any of the other students on the thread have any experience of this course either. I would recommend checking out the chat to students service linked here. You can find students studying this course or students who have experience of the management school and are happy to answer any questions.

In regards to your other question, Sheffield is a great city for international students, it is very culturally and ethnically diverse this is represented by the number of different societies we have ! There is a society for everyone regardless of where you are from or what you are interested in . Cost of living Sheffield is a very student adapted city so everything is very well priced, I am from York originally and Sheffield is very cheap in comparison. To give some perspective on cost of living, I spend £98 per week on accommodation including bills (this is a privately shared house) and my food bills rarely exceed £20 per week! You can comfortably live of around £60 per week in sheffield as a student for food and socialising ! I cannot comment on Newcastle as I haven't had any experience but they are also a very studenty city so I reckon pricing will be fairly similar. In Sheffield there are a lot of opportunities for part-time jobs, there are jobs available to work for the university which I find really good as the pay is great and they are very flexible with working hours. Sheffield is a big city so there are a lot of retail and hospitality jobs available also.

I hope this helps you out, if you have anymore questions please feel free to ask:smile:

Hi!

You're welcome glad to help. Don't worry about it Endcliffe is a great place to be in first year, it does depend on blocks and depends on who your flat mates and neighbours are really to determine how loud it will be. Any student accommodation will be noisy at times, but if you do have persistent problems you can contacts the uni security and they can come and ask people to quiten down a bit once it is after 11pm, there are also noise restrictions during exam periods and most people do follow these! But like I said don't worry too much, just enjoy yourself there are so many places you can go for quite study time across the uni too:smile:

Yes the uni pay at least minimum wage for work, typically more from the jobs I have worked the pay is typically been between £8-9.50 per hour. Some jobs will be term time only but others may want work over holiday times depending on what you apply for but this would be clear in the job description. There are a lot of 'odd jobs' which I personally like doing as they are only required for a short period of time and others for longer.

I hope this helps you out a bit, as always if you have anymore questions please feel free to ask

Hi !

For accommodation typically it is much cheaper privately depending on what you go for. I had a friend in 1st year who stayed in Ravenstones apartments, this was across the road from where I was staying (Kinder) in Ranmoor village. All the rooms in these blocks are the same and they are nice rooms, they are ensuite , with a single bed and have a good amount of desk space. I recommend looking here, there are 360 degree tours of Ranmoor and Endcliffe buildings which will give you an idea of what Ravenstones is like! As for Mappin I am not sure on this accommodation as I haven't had any personal experience of this, so I apologise I cannot help you more with that.

I hope this helps you out a bit, if you have anymore questions please feel free to ask

Hey, I have applied at Sheffield for Msc in Advance Computer Science and I received an offer letter from the university about a week ago. I need to know about the curriculum of the course and what are the job prospects after the course will be finished. Also, I have applied for the Scholarship program, being an above-average student and my academic background reflects some good grades on the mark sheet, what chances do I have to get accepted for that scholarship program.

Please, if anyone can give some insights on all these queries I raised above, that would be really helpful and appreciated.

Hey! Amazing to hear you're considering Sheffield for your Masters course (I think I've just replied to you on another thread as well - oops!) Unfortunately I cannot speak for the Computer Science side of things as I read Music, but as for job prospects post-masters course - you will be greatly supported at Sheffield by the careers service (https://www.sheffield.ac.uk/careers) and the jobshop which are both amazing services.

I am currently in my final year at Sheffield and hold an offer to continue onto a Masters course in September. A weird coincidence - I have literally just filled in my application for a scholarship too! I think it said that we should be emailed by June with the verdict.

Hope this helps somewhat! Do let us know if you have any further questions

How competitive is the 100+ postgraduate scholarship at the University of Sheffield? Are there any statistics available of how many people usually apply each year? Thanks

Hey! I'm not sure if there are any stats available but here's the website with all info about the scholarship - https://www.sheffield.ac.uk/postgraduate/taught/funding/scholarships
I should imagine it's fairly competitive but as long as you meet one of the criteria for it you might as well go for it and see!

Hiya Alisha,

I lived in endcliffe and was a ground floor flat opposite the edge at the front. To be honest, between around 11pm and 1am it was loud where I was, because people were making their way out and to clubs / bars etc. Aside from tat, during the day it was okay. The buzz at the peak times however was actually quite nice, it felt sociable and safe?? if that makes sense.

There are jobs on campus but usually around freshers time but I've never really seen many
