Random question which has the flattest walking route to/from the accommodation to the uni Ranmore/Endcliffe?

If walking to uni from endcliffe what route do most people take, or walking for nights out? I have looked on Google maps but wondered if there was scope to walk through Crewe or some other cut through please?
Hi @George&Mary44!

So the route you would take to/from uni is the one straight up/down the main road (probably the first one that comes up on google maps). Sadly there is no 'shortcut' or flat route as both endcliffe and ranmoor are based on the top of the hill. Sheffield was made on 7 hills so unfortunately is a very hilly city! However there are several busses that go straight up the hill that my friend's often hopped on if they were super tired!

As for nights out the main hotspot being west street is at the very bottom of campus so again would be an uphill climb on your way back to accommodation. If it helps when looking at the campus pag imagine the information commons at the bottom of the hill and endcliffe at the very top, everything else is scattered around in between.

Hope that helps!

Hi @arbs2005

What course are you looking at? As timetables vary massively depending on subject

Thanks,
Georgia

Hi Georgia! Thank you for the response, I'm applying for bioengineering.
Hello! I am thinking of applying to Sheffield for languages, but I have just seen this article which is worrying me slightly https://thetab.com/uk/sheffield/2021/05/07/a-glorified-duolingo-languages-students-anger-over-changes-which-could-de-value-degree-48076
Can you guys confirm that these plans have or have not gone ahead?

Hi,

Just thought I would add: There is a cut-through through Crewe flats that you can take during the day, although the gate is usually closed at night. Most people walk back along Whitham road, and there are always lots of students walking back the same way so it is very safe at night.
You will get used to the hills very quickly, don't worry!

Hi,

I have managed to get hold of a first year bioengineering student. Their current timetable has a 9-10am lecture on Thursdays, two computer tutorials, one on Monday afternoon and one on Thursday afternoon. They also have various lab sessions throughout the week and a group project tutorial session every couple of weeks.

I hope this helps!
Let me know if you have any other questions

Thanks,
Evie
Hi!
I understand that this is a very broad question and very dependent on classes that you take but would you say it's common for classes to be held on a Friday or Friday afternoon? I'm an incoming exchange student and I want to plan some weekend trips (hehe) but I'm scared of missing too many classes if I leave on a Friday to travel.

Thanks!

Hi,
It really depends on which subject you are studying and the modules you are taking. Unfortunately you will not know until you get your timetable at the start of the year! Sorry for not being much help!
I'm sure you'll be able to plan some trips when you get here too.

Hi thrivingfrog!
The university gym is called Sport Sheffield. This is their website: https://www.sport-sheffield.com/
Unfortunately as they are in the process of refurbishing, they can't confirm membership costs right now!

Hi there! I’m a Computer Science student. I was wondering if anyone here would have an idea about the industry links and placement opportunities the university has for CS

The university website says the fitness suite is free to use for people living in University accommodation, is this correct?
Do Sheffield consider resits for medicine and are resit applicants disadvantaged in any way?

The main University gym is Goodwin - you can access this with a paid membership.
There is a separate small gym in Ranmoor for students staying in university accommodation, this is free to use. It has running machines, cross-trainers, watt-bikes and weights machines.

As far as I am aware The University of Sheffield does consider resits for medicine, however it is worth contacting the admissions team to discuss this as policies may have changed.
This is the email for the medicine admissions team: [email protected]

Hi,

The computer sciences course can be taken with a year in industry so a 38 week placement in your 3rd year. There is a careers and placement team at the university that will help you find a placement if you wish to do the year in industry.
Hope this answers your question, let us know if you have any more.

Lizzie
