I live at Great Dover Street - it is really nice, the rooms are quite small but having an en-suite is a BIG bonus, not a necessity, but great all the same. Plus, our kitchen (for six people) is absolutely huge. We have our own fridges in our rooms, with a wee ice box that can keep a few frozen things in it. I will post a photo of my room when I get back to London at the weekend.
There aren't as many law students at GDS as there are at Stamford Street, obviously, but we're not few and far between. It did not take me long to find other law students during my first weekend living here. There is a plethora of medics and people studying biomedical sciences, but that's to be expected. I had GDS down as my second choice after Stamford Street and the apartment set-up as my preferred accomodation, so I was lucky and I'm pleased.
Advantages of Great Dover Street
- Modern rooms
- En suite
- Proximity to Borough Market (the most fantastic place to go food shopping, ever)
- Close to both Borough and London Bridge tube stations
- Reasonable kitchens, with a good ratio of people to a kitchen
- Computer room if you don't have your own
- Near attractions like Southwark Cathedral, the Globe (I can't wait to be able to go to performances in the summer) and the Tate Modern.
Disadvantages
- A bit of a trek over to Waterloo compared to other residences (half an hour walk or ten minutes to walk with a further ten minutes on the bus) and about twenty minutes on the tube to the Strand
- The area is not as nice as where the intercollegiate halls are in Bloomsbury, it is quite poor in most places and there is some reports of people being mugged etc. (However I was attacked in broad daylight in a WC2 area and everyone I've encountered locally near GDS has been extremely polite and friendly, so it's all relative)
- There isn't a great deal of space to socialise
