English language paper 1 q4

A student said, ‘This part of the story, where Alice is sent back along the road to find what has fallen from the roof and returns with the chrysanthemums, shows how hard and cruel Hartop is, so that all of our sympathy is with Alice.’

To what extent do you agree?

Can you help me answer this question??

I said that because the extract ( that part of the story ) is in a cyclical narrative where she starts and ends on the road we feel sorry for her because she is continuously alone .
But hartop is not cruel is looking out for his family. Repetition of ' only' shows they dont have much so he trying to help them live.
sorry but could you put a link to the text i don't remember it...
But i made one more point for the statement and i got 16/20.

Thats ok! I am pretty sure that they are the only points i made but i developed the well to show the effect of the methods and how they make us feel bad for Alice .
You could also talk about the repetition of the 'go on. Go on ' by hartop which shows his desperation again.
And the short sentence at the end builds up tension about whether Alice would get hurt or ot.
