Edinburgh accommodation- private or not?

Hi guys,
I'm torn between firming Durham or Edinburgh for Japanese Studies, however, in terms of accommodation I'm finding the choice at Edinburgh a bit overwhelming. The private student halls look really nice but I'm not sure what the social life is like in them. Do you find that there are more undergraduates in the uni-owned halls?

A lot of people in halls are first year students, second year onwards people will usually get private accommodation. Social life could depend on what accommodation you are in, the more sociable halls are Pollock Halls (especially Chancellor's Court) and Salisbury Court.

To help you decide what to pick, think about what you are wanting. Do you want to be within walking distance to George Square? Do you want an en-suite room or is sharing a bathroom okay? Do you want catered or self catered? Once you know what you are looking for you can narrow down your options and hoepfully feel less overwhelmed.
