University of Sheffield Biomedical science student- Ask Me Anything!

Hello!

My names Cara and I am just about to start my 3rd year studying Biomedical Science at the University of Sheffield.

Over the past year I have worked as a Student Ambassador for the university and also been a part of a volunteering programme helping elderly people in the community.
When I am not studying I love socialising with friends, going to the gym and going on walks in the Peak District!

I have loved the past two years and am here to answer any questions you might have about my course, accommodation, social life or anything else uni related!

Feel free to chat to me or other university students on The Access Platform using this link -

Any general tips on studying biomedical sciences? Also any advice on things you wish you had done when you were studying biomedical sciences. Thanks!

Hello! Thanks for your question- at Sheffield university the lecturers link any useful textbooks associated with the lecture given at the end that will help you understand more or read around the topic. Once clicked on these links will tell you which library the textbook is available in on campus so you can go pick it up and have a read! There are also online versions available and if you wish to purchase your own copy to keep a great place to do this is Blackwells university bookshop on campus (located by Jessop West building) which offers 2nd hand discounted books !
My best tip when studying Biomedical Science at the University of Sheffield is to stay on top of your work! This is the same for all degrees and it’s important to not leave things until the last minute as all the deadlines pile up and then you get stressed! Another tip I would give is make sure you understand the topic before you write out the notes for it. This makes it so much easier to revise from when you do so a couple months later. Hope this helps

also because of covid i heard uni of sheff students for some courses are given 24 hours for their exams, is that similar for biomed or no?
also if you don't mind me asking, what are you thinking of doing after biomed?.
URGENT clarification on the Clearing process (Results recieved already!)

Good afternoon, Tanujj here
I am an international applicant from a CBSE (Indian High School Background) wanting to apply for the BSc Biomedical Sciences program commencing September this year.

I do have my Grade 12 (Final Year) Official results with me, and after sending them a mail and having a chat with admissions, they confirmed that I do meet and exceed the entry requirements for the course.

Since they said this, I asked them, after applying through UCAS clearing for the course, "would I be given an unconditional offer or not "?, as I clearly exceed the entry requirements required.
To that, they said they can't be sure as they would have to go through my personal statement and references, and the offer is not guaranteed. I didn't quite understand this.

As with other universities, they did make me an Unconditional Verbal offer on the email/ chat, after I'd told them my results, and then encouraged me to apply through the UCAS portal.

So before I apply to Sheffield through UCAS, I want to be sure that I would be made an offer based on my achieved grades/results. As, this is my ONLY chance to get an offer through clearing at this point.

I talked to the biosciences admissions team, and the above were their responses, additionally, they told me they don't deal with biomedical sciences applications directly recived through clearing and that there is a different team for that.
Hence, could you please give me the contact/phone number team who deals with the clearing applications directly?, so that I can contact them and discuss my application directly with them, whilst sharing my UCAS ID, so they can see my full application.

The clearing hotline only starts from A-Level Results day, and I don't want to wait that for that long, as I already have my results in hand

How did you find the exams in first year?

How did you find the exams in first year?

Hi,
Cara is no longer working on TSR. I am not studying biomedicine, but from what I have heard from my friends, the difficulty is not a huge step up from A levels - especially in first year - however there is more of it to learn. The biosciences department are also very good at testing students via different types of exams and assignments, so if exams are not your strong suit then it will not disadvantage you.
You can also talk to current biomedical sciences students on the chat function of our website: https://www.sheffield.ac.uk/study/chat
I hope this helps!

Hello,
Would you happen to have any example SPF assignments that I could look through as I have my first SPF report that I will have to do in my second year and I have not done this before. Or if you had any tips on how to achieve above 70% (A first) on the assignment.
Thank You
