Added Blue Period to the list, because that's something I missed. :ahee:

Also, the first few series have started airing now! :yay: Hopefully I'll have time to share my thoughts on one of them tonight.
As usual, I'll keep my impressions posts about sequels short:

Isekai Shokudou 2 (Restaurant to Another World 2)

More of the same relaxing, slice of life goodness I expected after watching the first series. Various fantasy world characters stumble across a magical door, which takes them to a Western-style restaurant in modern day Japan, offering tasty treats the likes of which they've never seen before. Detailed food reviews and reactions ensue. Hard to pin down what's so enjoyable about it, but I'm certainly up for more~

Another sequel:

86: Eighty-Six 2nd Season

We resume after a brief time skip! First, we got an update on Milize - now demoted to Captain and re-assigned from Spearhead, but still acting as Handler to another squadron. It seems she is supporting them far more directly and openly, breaking rules and attracting complaints from other officers, but for now this is tolerated as she brings results. And then, we got to see the fate of S1's other main characters... very interesting stuff!

My first all-new series of Autumn 2021!

Mieruko-chan

All of a sudden, main character Miko can see ghosts. These spirits, which appear all over the place, seem to gravitate towards her, many asking the question 'can you see me?' But, despite being absolutely terrified, she ignores them, and eventually they go away. That's the main premise for this comedy horror - how well will Miko be able to keep up her act in various everyday situations? This episode also introduced Miko's gluttonous friend Hana, who (like most other people) seems completely oblivious to the apparitions all around them - no doubt there to call out any weird reactions Miko might let slip.

I liked the bait and switch horror intro, the OP and ED are fun, and the animation quality is very decent for a non-action series. Be warned however, that the ecchi content is quite high - any opportunity to zoom in on boobs and butts is taken. Apparently the source manga drops the fanservice early on, but will the anime follow suit? I'm keeping this on for now, should get me into the early Hallowe'en spirit!

The non-sequel anime that I've been most looking forward to this season:

Tsuki to Laika to Nosferatu (Irina: The Vampire Cosmonaut)

Though this series is set in a fantasy world, it is analogous to our own 1960s, only with vampires. There is a space race going on between the 'UZSR' (where our main characters come from) and the 'UK' (their world's USA, just to confuse things). Not-Russia has successfully put the first dog in space, but contrary to their propaganda, he didn't survive for long. Now, they are looking to do the same with a human pilot, but a mission resulting in the death of one of their highly prized cosmonauts would be far harder to cover up. Enter Irina, a vampire, seen as a disposable test subject - not human, but close enough to provide valuable data. Our other protagonist is Lev, a reserve cosmonaut assigned to train her.

This first episode did a good job of introducing the main cast, as well as setting out what being a vampire actually means in their world - apparently the same stereotypes (garlic, crosses, sucking blood etc) prevail thanks to the movies, though most are completely inaccurate. More than anything, it means distrust and racism. Hopefully their months of training together will build mutual understanding.

More vampires:

Kyuuketsuki Sugu Shinu (The Vampire Dies in No Time)

A young boy has gone missing, believed to have been abducted by the fearsome vampire lord Dralc. Fortunately, famed vampire hunter Ronaldo is on the case. But when he arrives at Dralc's mansion, the vampire doesn't quite live up to the hype - in fact, he crumbles to sand at the slightest bump or fright! Not permanently, thanks to his regenerative powers, but that seems to be the only positive vampire trait he has, to go with all their weaknesses. Turns out the boy sneaked into the house of his own accord, and doesn't want to go home, so Ronaldo (not wanting to fail the job and damage his reputation) and Dralc (who wants both of them gone ASAP) team up to teach him a lesson. Hilarity ensues.

Honestly, this is a great slapstick comedy. Simple, dumb, but effective, playing on all the tropes of vampires and hunters, as well as more mundane issues such as Ronaldo advertising and maintaining a positive reputation for his services online. Voice acting was on point. Loved the OP. I just hope that 'the dying in no time' gag won't get old too quickly.

Funimation updated their video player - no more big watermarks in the corner!

Kyoukai Senki (AMAIM Warrior at the Borderline)

Due to declining birth rate and economic collapse, Japan relies on aid from four powerful nations. However, those countries use this premise to occupy and take over. War breaks out, using large unmanned mecha known as AMAIM - when the dust settles, Japan is split into four parts. Amou is a young Japanese orphan, living in this new reality. His hobby is to collect AMAIM parts from machines destroyed during the war, which he uses to rebuild one in an abandoned workshop. Unfortunately, forces from Oceania are onto him, labelling him a terrorist. Faced with a likely prison sentence, Amou instead puts his trust in a mysterious AI that he found while salvaging, hooking it up to the robot and fighting back.

Of the six new series I've sampled so far, this impressed me the least. The premise is giving off a somewhat nationalist / xenophobic vibe. The AI (named Gai) is a bit annoying, too. Mech designs and overall production values are decent - this is Sunrise after all. I'm sure the action scenes will be great if nothing else, but for now, it goes on my 'maybe list' until I've seen more of what Autumn has to offer. [EDIT] Dropped. :nn:

Platinum End

Following the death of his parents in an explosion, protagonist Mirai is taken in by his abusive aunt and uncle. Years later, on the day of his graduation from middle school, he decides to end his life. But after jumping from a rooftop, he is caught by an angel named Nasse! Initially annoyed by her unwanted intervention and positive talk, Mirai eventually decides to give life another chance after Nasse gifts him 'freedom' in the form of invisible angel's wings, and 'love' via a cupid's arrow capable of bewitching anyone that he shoots. Oh, and by signing up to this, he also becomes a candidate in a survival game to determine the next 'god'... but she conveniently forgets to mention that until afterwards.

From the creators of Death Note comes another supernatural thriller revolving around death and justice. I'm liking the characters so far - Mirai now only wants to use his powers to maintain a simple and peaceful life, but Nasse (despite all her cheerful demeanour and words about wishing him happiness) is clearly not going to let that happen. Certainly has a lot of potential.

Sakugan

Nine year old Memempu and her father Gagumber (the names in this series are great ) live in an underground colony. Most of the surrounding area is an uncharted labyrinth, inhabited by giant, hostile kaijuu. Memepu longs to join the people known as Markers who explore and map the labyrinth - specifically, there is one location that she keeps seeing in her dreams, and that she's convinced exists out there somewhere. However, Gagumber feels she is too young for such a dangerous job, and so they argue and one-up each other using wild inventions and traps... until one day, when their colony is invaded by kaijuu. With the life they previously knew over, Gagumber agrees to let Memepu leave - together with him.

A solid first episode, with plenty of style and comedy, but also action and drama. The father-daughter dynamic is brilliant, hopefully that'll lead to some interactions and situations that you wouldn't get with more typical protagonists. The 2D animation and direction was very good; the kaijuu did stand out a bit with their clunky 3DCG, but in a way that makes them feel more alien. Music was fabulous. Highly recommended so far!

Last one for today:

takt op.Destiny

One day, Earth was struck by a black meteorite, carrying dangerous aliens known as D2. These D2 despise the sounds humans make, particularly homing in on music, attempting to destroy the source of the noise. As a result, music is banned, and a new generation of children are growing up in a world without it. Magical girls known as 'Musicart', along with their human 'Conductors', are the only force capable of challenging the D2, using the power of music as a weapon. This series focuses on a Musicart named Cosette, a Conductor named Takt, and their long suffering guardian figure Anna, as they travel across North America towards New York, fighting D2 along the way.

Like all the other series so far, there was plenty of exposition and world building at the start of the ep, yet many questions remain - what exactly are the Musicarts? How did these three characters meet? Hopefully they'll be answered as the series progresses, but for now, I'm impressed: awesome action scenes, nice soundtrack (important in a music-themed anime!), and an amusing main cast.

Blue Period

Main character Yatora is a hard worker and a practical thinker. He puts effort into his studies to get great grades, and into socialising with his friends (even at the cost of his own health, as they're all smokers), because he thinks these things will lead to a straight forward and successful life. And yet, he has a creative side which he is afraid to express, knowing that the world of the arts offers far lower chance of financial stability. But one day, after being captivated by an unfinished painting in the art class, he can no longer hold back - he decides to enrol in the school art club, and aim for a place in Japan's only public art University, notorious for its low rate of admission.

Another series with an interesting cast - including a gender nonconforming character in art club member Yuka! Who Yatora proceeded to dead name; not cool, though this was while he was still stubbornly sticking to his delinquent, art-hating act. Hopefully by being true to himself and embracing his passion, he'll be less of a jerk moving forward. However, their art teacher was the real MVP of this episode.

Puraore! Pride of Orange

The episode starts with our main characters playing ice hockey, representing Japan in the world cup no less - and they win! Following this, they give a full idol performance on the rink. :lolwut: Then, we flash back to a time before they'd ever played ice hockey. We learn that they're in middle school, members of the embroidery club, that they have free access to a hot spring due to family connections, and that they like strawberries. About half way through, we get back to ice hockey, after one of them suggests they try it out. They do, and they enjoy it. Turns out it's the manager of their local team who thought to combine the sport with singing and dancing, which they're less keen on, but go along with anyway.

So, what the heck is this? Certainly not a serious sports anime, though it did actually spend more time than most focusing on things such as warm ups and teaching the basics. For all its bizarre lack of focus, I actually found it very watchable. Animation was very decent, and the idol music (while not really my thing) was easy enough to listen to. One for the maybe list. [EDIT] Dropped. :nn:

Tesla Note

Highschool girl Negoro Botan has been raised as a ninja since birth, trained by her grandfather in order to carry out a task that was entrusted to him over 70 years ago by Nikola Tesla - turns out the great inventor encased a load of his inventions in crystal shards, but figured that one day someone might use them for bad things. And after a packed train in Oslo, Norway suddenly vanishes into thin air mid-journey, only to re-appear in Japan and smash into a building, it seems that day has finally arrived. Assigned to work with Botan to recover these shards is an intelligence agent named Kuruma, who spent most of this episode bickering with her, and failing to do the one task that was assigned to him.

So the plot is ridiculous, but it's clearly self aware. The characters don't act like your usual professional secret agents; their first 'mission' was cringeworthy. Animation wise, mostly 3DCG - fluid, but not pretty, and mixed in with worse looking 2D animation (presumably to cut costs). I can see why this is A-P's lowest rated Autumn series so far!
