I was told last night that liverpool have taken 320 medical students onto the 1st year this year. Isn't that ridiculously high. If so many graduates start to graduate won't the salaries go down and job opportunities become less too?

That is already happening.
is it really?

Not so much at foundation level - there are enough jobs to go around, but it might not be working where you want to work. It's definitely happening at Speciality Trainee level...
Yeah theres already a shortage, i remember this in the news during the summer...they should focus more on the shortage of nurses though, i was on a ward today with one staff nurse, to 17 patients...which was ridiculous

Hey Anna - you decided your course wasn't right for you? (Just noticed your sig)

Yeah...i spent all my time enjoying the lectures i shared with the nurses and not my own cardiology ones, it was more diagnostic than expected, and i wasn't really impressed with the facilities..teaching etc..we were sort of an after thought really. I was doubting whether to do the course before i started but thought i'd give it a shot..and within a week i knew i wanted to do something else..dropped out, spent some time doing midwifery and nursing WE, and decided to do nursing.. (as midwifery is ridiculously hard to get into as a 19yr old, childless girl fresh out of sixth form!!)

It's odd. Overall, there's a relative shortage of doctors. However, that's confused (and confounded) by the relative shortage of posts and shortage of training posts.

Not imposible though - if you want to be a madwife, go for it! I have a few madwife friends I made during my O&G placement, a few started straight from school... I can ask what they had for their application if you want.

That would be helpful, my mum is an antenatal teacher and lectures at UWE for the midwifery course, and says theres only 2-3 people who are 18/19 and straight from sixth form out of around 60 people who get in..as they prefer mature students due to the drop out, and believing many girls don't 'fully understand' the role.

I've considered applying to 3 Midwife degrees, and then 2 nursing (as a back up) but the personal statement writing would be a bitch...

Our madwife students were from City... Will facebook em now... Making the most of people like your mum should help your PS - making the point that you understand the role etc...

The more i think about it..the more i want to do it, my only worry is that i should generalise with nursing..then specialise later on (eg do the 18th month conversion if i still want to do it in 3years time)

Mainly as my last course i didn't enjoy as it was specialised...and im worried of making the same mistake.

Plus when i tell my mum im doing midwifery im afraid she may implode with happiness....

I wouldn't worry about jobs, if there arent jobs in the UK there will be elsewhere. The problem isn't actually a shortage of requirement or an excess of supply, but rather a shortage of people willling to pay the salaries and training costs. Back in 'the day' we didn't bother to train our doctors, we used to let india and pakistan do it and get them at consultant level.
