Surrey Vet Med advice from current students

Hi everyone! I have accepted an offer to study vet med at Surrey this year, but I have quite a few questions I’m hoping someone can help with!

So, I am self funding the tuition fees as this is my second undergrad degree, and so to save money I am planning on living at home and commuting (1 hour drive). Is this practical, or am I going to hate it?? I really can’t afford to pay rent etc but I don’t want the course to be unbearable.

Also, would any current students be able to share their first year timetable with me? I know it will obviously be different every year but I just want a rough idea of timings, as I work sleeping nights (shift starts at 4pm finishes 9am) and want to know if this will be possible with the timetable. I do know wed afternoons are usually free which is good.

Also, does anyone know where I can find the PPE/ equipment you have to buy second hand??

Thanks in advance!
Chloe
Hi there,
I'm in a similar postion but i'm heading to RVC hopefully. The funding is the problem because of other issues I haven't been able to save. Plus I didn't think I would get in so you can imagine my surprise when I did! Like you i'm planning to commute but via train. Living in London is too expensive and I live with my partner so I have to find some way of paying something towards rent. I've looked at private finance, scholarships, bursaries and i've taken on a part time job on top of my full time job! Still, it feels like an impossible task to achieve.

Glad to know I’m not alone! It is really a lot of money, I have saved some of the tuition fees but no where near enough and since all my savings are going on that, there’s nothing left for rent etc to live on/ near campus…
Congrats on getting in, though! I was the same, really wasn’t expecting to get in and then when I did I was sort of filled with dread instead of excitement just because of the finance!

Congratulations too, and I was exactly the same!
I feel like the Student Finance has really let us down, especially when it is such a specialist course and the industry is crying out for vets. Not to mention how notoriously difficult it is to get a place so sometimes the graduate route feels like the only route in rather than a gap year. You'd think they would atleast let you have the tuition for the 4/5th years of the course since we'll have only had 3 years funding!
I'm working every hour that's thrown at me to start saving and my plan is to work the weekends!

Hi, I'm a 2nd year vet student at Surrey,
I know many people who commute ~1 hour so it's definitely doable.
Facebook would be the best place to get second hand PPE, I think there's a page called 'Surrey Vets Buy and Sell' or something similar

Best wishes!

Hiya, congratulations! did you start the course at surrey? I am in the same position as you and have an interview in January. How are you finding the course and commute? and are you able to work much alongside the course? My same worry is finance, its going to be tough and very tight financially.
