2023 Veterinary Medicine Applicants

Hi, I’m sorry if this thread has already been made, (in that case it can be deleted), I’ve looked for a thread for students currently in the summer between Year 11 and Year 12 who’ll be applying to study Veterinary Medicine in 2023 but couldn’t find one.

If you’re new to the thread, it would be great if you could introduce yourself!
I’ll start:
1. The subjects you are doing:
I’m doing AQA A Level Biology, Chemistry and Maths.
2. The work experience you have so far:
I have three weeks- lambing, SA Vet and City Farm.
3. The universities you’re considering:
I’m not sure but am thinking of Nottingham, Surrey, Bristol, and Liverpool.

Here’s the uni decisions spreadsheet link for everyone that’s asking for it!

Here is the survey to add to the spreadsheet:

In September I’ll be doing Biology, Chemistry and Maths A Levels.

Hi! I'm planning to study vet med in 2023 as well, in September I'll be doing the exact same A Levels as you
Have you managed to get any work experience so far?
Hi guys!! I’m a current student at Nottingham in the April cohort! (So currently half way through my first year!) if you need any help let me know!

Hi, thank you! I'm having trouble finding any work experience, could you advise me on how I could find some? I've emailed a few practices but I haven't got any replies :frown:

Hey! You have two choices if you’ve had no replies. Either email again or phone them. Phoning is often seen as better as you take more initiative but on the other side vet practices are very busy so either one works! What other work experience do you have?? Farms are good and will potentially let you go on even with covid because it’s free labour. Keep trying you’ll find places in the end.

Hello! I haven’t had any work experience yet :frown: but I’ll be doing a week in a Veterinary Clinic during the October half term and have been volunteering at a City Farm for a few months so hopefully I will be able to get some more.

Nottingham is absolutely brilliant!! If you want to know specifics let me know! Yeah the application process is pretty bad! I ended up with all my offers but it was one of the most stressful periods of my life but it is totally worth it. Vet med is hard but it is so rewarding

Hi, I’m also in y12 studying those subjects! I know this thread hasn’t been used in a while, but how are you finding a levels and the prospect of applying?

Hi!!! I’m finding A Levels quite difficult, honestly. There is just so much content and I’m really behind, especially on my EPQ. I am excited to be applying soon but also completely terrified of being rejected and not receiving any offers. How are you feeling? :frown:

Hi!
I'm in Year 12 and studying Biology, Chemistry, Music and Geography, managed to book 11 days work experience at a wildlife hospital, but I've had no luck with small animal practices...

Hi you have plenty of time! What I did to get a small animal practice was go on a Wednesday afternoon instead of doing PE at sixth form. There’s less to do but often more availability. If you get no’s by email it is still worth phoning or going in with a CV or covering letter just in case. I know some people in my year had to stay at family members houses to do work experience from there in the holidays. What area are you in? Do you have any other work experience booked?

I'm in Berkshire, there's tonnes of vets (farm animal, small animal, even camelid specialists!). Unfortunately no one is taking placements at the moment due to COVID :frown:
My local vets and my nearby large animal practice have said they might have placements available in the summer. I live next to a beef farm, so I'm going to ask there too

That’s really good! Keep checking in and you’ll find something. Have you tried finding lambing (look at the national sheep association lambing list)? What about kennels/catteries/rescue centres as well as farm parks!

Hi, everyone. I’m Angel from China. I’m actually a 2022 vetmed applicants. I want to thank for all help people in TSR sent to me, so I decide to offer help here for vetmed students next year.
I took triple sciences, maths, economics, music, English as first and English as second language as my IGCSE and got 4A+(science and maths),2A and 2B.
For A-Level, I took math, further math and triple sciences. I already complete A-level math and got an A star in math during learning GCSEs, so am currently doing further math and triple sciences in my A2 year. Predicted grade 4A+,1A(FM)
Work experience: 2 small animal practice, 1 stable, 1 dairy farm, 1 zoo and 1 conservation center for about 300 hours in total.
I applied for RVC, Liverpool, Bristol and Nottingham.
Got an offer from Liverpool and a pre-interview rejection from Nottingham.
Liverpool is my second choice, so waiting for RVC only at this moment.
If you have any question related to the application process, feel free to DM or leave posts here, I’ll be happy to reply if I could.

Just 2 tips here.
Liverpool wants more than 5 A in GCSEs as a condition for receiving interview invitation.
Edinburgh wants a academic transcript as part of the material for calling for interview.
So pay attention to daily tests, I rlly regret not paying effort in tests like unit test which is a reason why I haven’t applied to Edinburgh.

Hi everyone, I'm so glad there's more people here! I live in London so there are basically no opportunites within an hour on public transport, but I have completed a week of SA vets at least, and am working on securing some more placements. I have a week of lambing booked for the Easter holidays which I am very excited for!! Right now I am not sure where I will apply to but I am thinking of Liverpool, Bristol, Nottingham and Harper-Keele? (or Maybe Surrey or Edinburgh??) I don't think I will apply to the RVC because I would like to stay in University Accomodation.
Hey that’s great you got a lambing placement! Yeah, I’d like to stay in uni accommodation too, I thinking of applying to Liverpool, Nottingham, Bristol, Edinburgh:smile:
Hi everyone! I'm still having some difficulty getting placements but hopefully will have some more luck soon.
