Universities for film or theatre production

Does anyone know the best Universities for film or theatre production?I'm undecided on which industry I want to go into yet (i'm hoping to get a better idea from open days), I'm also still considering apprenticeships if that would be best but I'm leaning towards uni.I'm more interested in practical work and going into a uni that will help get me into the industry. I know there are some combined course but I'm not sure if that's what I want to do, I think it would probably be more useful to focus my energy on one thing.I've only visited Metfilm school so far, I did like it but I want to broaden my options. I'm hopefully also visiting Surrey for theatre production but I'm not sure yet.If anyone knows any Unis that would be worth looking into please let me know! Thanks!
Hello I’m a representative for the university of Kent!

Here at Kent we offer a flexible choice of both film theory and practice! You’ll be in control of your learning with the ability to decide the modules you take during your learning at Kent!

You’ll be heavily supported with designated office hours to visit teachers and talk through things you possibly didn’t understand, but you can also email them at any time and they will usually get back to you in a timely manner.

We also have a few theatre societies that will teach you about lighting, stage management and sound.

If you’d like to find out more about the course you can look at it here: https://www.kent.ac.uk/courses/undergraduate/99/film

Any further questions please don’t hesitate to ask!
Hi there,

Here at Chichester we offer several different options for Digital Film Production and Digital Film Technologies, some combining with things like Screenwriting or Screen Acting.
We have the Tech Park which is a purpose built building that is dedicated to the Creative Industries and Engineering courses, which is fully equipped with professional equipment for you to use and learn.
The courses are also really practical, with opportunities for industry work placements!

If this sounds of interest you can have a look at our courses here.

I hope this helps a bit and good luck in your search

Hi there,

To introduce myself I'm Joao. In my final year studying BSc Economics at Surrey University.

Our practice-based BA (Hons) Theatre Production course provides you with professional training in a wide range of production skills. Guildford School of Acting (GSA) is one of the UK's most highly regarded theatre schools. You will be joining a vibrant community of performers, performance makers, creative practitioners, and backstage technicians. You'll collaborate closely with fellow students to deliver a variety of productions within our modern, large and well-equipped Ivy Arts Centre theatre. We're ranked 5th in the UK for drama, dance and cinematic in the Complete University Guide 2022 and The Times/Sunday Times Good University Guide 2022.

In our BA (Hons) Theatre Production course, you'll work on various productions, including plays, musicals, concerts, devised projects and events. The period begins with a comprehensive introduction to all core subjects relating to professional theatre production. You'll gain experience in various skills, including sound, lighting, video, stage management, and construction and scenic arts. As you progress through the course, you'll be able to select one dedicated area for specialist development, eventually taking production-critical responsibility across a range of public performances within the University and at external venues. Industry placement and professional development modules are also a core part of this course, and you'll have the opportunity to present your work at a final-year showcase event.

Finally, the campus is lovely. Surrey is known to emphasize the social life of students and always cares about how you spend your free time at University. The student union offers more than 140 societies based on any hobbies and interests students have and clubs for all kinds of sports that a student might want to take up. And even with covid restrictions, the union managed to organize one of the country's most significant covid-safe university events!

If you have questions about Surrey or uni life in general, please ask as I can help you!

Hey!

The University of Warwick offers two courses which might be of interest to you! Theatre and Performance Studies (https://warwick.ac.uk/fac/arts/scapvc/theatre/) and Film and TV Studies (https://warwick.ac.uk/fac/arts/scapvc/film/). Film and TV Studies is ranked Number 1 (2022) in the UK in the subject area by The Times, The Guardian and the 2021 National Student Survey!
Both these courses have options for placements and study abroad opportunities and your classes would take place in the new Faculty of Arts Building (FAB), which was only opened in January this year and has incredible new facilities (Black Box Studios, Screening Rooms, Mac Suite and many more!). At Warwick, our courses are also very flexible: I’ve just finished my first year as a Theatre and Performance Studies student and for my second year, I had the opportunity to choose up to two modules from another course or even a completely different department! This means you could potentially combine both of your interests without studying a joined degree. This means you would still focus mainly on one subject area, but gain useful insights into the other, which might broaden your options after your UG course.
If you want to take up any extracurricular activities alongside your studies to gain even more practical experience, you could join one (or several for that matter!) of our drama societies (https://www.warwicksu.com/societies-sports/societies/#findSoc - just type in theatre in the search bar and all of them will come up) and produce different shows or even try other (backstage) roles that you’re interested in!
If you’ve got any more questions, feel free to reply to this post and I’m happy to answer!!

The best universities for theatre production aren’t likely to be the best for film production.

You would be best off narrowing down your course choice to a single subject before coming up with a shortlist of universities.
I know this is a year+ late and everything but for anyone else wondering I'm 16 and I went to an open day at the University of Essex in Wivenhoe. I went to one of their film talks and I loved it so much. The entire module fits in with the whole reason I love film and got into in the first place. Bath and Glasgow had previously been my dream unis but not only is this one closer to me I can also do a joint degree and take a gap year. 100% applying as soon as I can.
