how often to come home from uni?

hello!

I was just wondering how often (and when) people go home from uni. I'll be living over 200 miles away and getting home wouldn't be easy (I can't drive, so it would either be a 40 quid night bus or a 200 quid train...) but I'd be willing (and hopefully, able) to pay as and when but don't expect to be able to go home as much as my friends who live say 30 to 50 miles away from home.

TLDR; how often do you go home? and when in the year?

Thank you!
I only went home for Christmas and summer. 350+ miles away.

I live about 35 miles from my uni, and had brief visits home once a term for medical appointments, and then for a couple of weeks at Christmas and Easter. I'm home all summer since my accommodation contract was only 40 weeks, but I'd probably stay at uni longer if I had a full year contract.

You might find some people go home more often if they get homesick or have extra commitments at home (e.g. I had a friend who went home every weekend for a job and medical care), but for the most part I've found term is too busy with work and socialising to be heading home much, no matter how close you live.
I go home for Christmas, Easter and the summer. And its about 150 miles away.
Im planning to come home for a short visit once a week after my driving lessons, i have family issues so my presence need not to be forgotten

Hi @youbetterbelieve [br] [br] It completely depends on you really. There was a girl in my halls in first year that went home every single weekend, whereas I went home every few months. I found it necessary to go home for a weekend or during reading week as I got homesick and missed my family (and dogs!), but others didn't feel as homesick so did not travel back as often.

My university was closer to my home than yours is, so I was able to go back and forth easier. But you may find you only want to go back for the Christmas and Easter holidays, or you may find that you want to go back more often. It's one of those you that you won't really know until you move, but either way as long as you are doing what is best for you and your mental health then go home as often or as little as you like!

Best of luck with the move and starting uni!

@youbetterbelieve I only went home for a week or two during holidays, but would often visit friends and family in cities in the middle of us to make travel easier. You could do the same, or have weekends away with family and friends in cities in the middle of you both. Most people just go back home during holidays, though if you are only studying online you could go back then too if you wanted.

Don't feel pressured to go back all the time though

I went home every three weeks, but I was only 50 miles away with cheap transport back to London (my home city) and I was going back at that interval for my piano lessons anyway (I'm a music student). Plus I'm South Asian and liked getting fed and having my washing done for me

Most people at my uni didn't go back as much as I did but your peers don't tend to care/judge how often or not you go back home :nah:

I went at the end of each term.

Hi @youbetterbelieve

I live a similar distance to you, and I only go home during the holidays and will go home for the whole holidays For me, this is a good balance and occasionally my family will come up and visit me or we will meet halfway. Have you got a railcard? If not it may be worth it because it does make travel (especially over that distance) cheaper.

Hope this helps and good luck at uni,
Kat
I went home usually once every 4-6 weeks. But I lived an easy 1.5 hour train ride away. My friends with homes further afield generally went home 3 times a year in the Christmas, Easter and Summer hols.
Hi,

This really depends on yourself and how often you would like to travel back home. It may feel like you want to visit more often at the start of the year but as you settle in and feel more confident and used to being at university it may be less.

I live at home whilst travelling to uni however all the other students in my first-year tutor group travelled from various areas of the country. They would go home at the end of each term, as well as during the holidays (Christmas and Easter). There were also reading weeks during both the first and second term which was one week where no new material was taught and in effect it was a time to catch up and some people would go home during these weeks as well.

I hope this helps and wishing you a great uni experience

Hiya!

As everyone has said so far, it really does vary per student! Most will go home during the holidays (Christmas, Easter, any reading weeks!) but at my university in Manchester I found there was a number of international students or students in your position that would stay during these times!

I would say if you're hoping to go home a little more often then that (which is totally valid, sometimes you may get homesick or want to see your home friends/family) then it's worth checking student groups for your uni on Facebook. Sometimes people will book a ticket and not be able to go, so will sell it at a discounted price. If not, I found 2 people on my course who lived in my home city. One of them didn't drive, so we would just get the train/night bus together to make travelling go by a bit faster! The other did drive and I would offer petrol money for them coming to pick me up. This might be the same for you! I hope that answers your question 🙂 best of luck at uni!
