All about University life

University can be a leap into the unknown, it can be daunting and scary but at the same time can be so much fun. In this post I hope to give you an idea about all things University.

Timetable
Different courses vary but to give you an idea in semester one of year 1, I had three modules for each of these modules I would have a lecture and a seminar. My lectures lasted an hour and half. For the same module I would then have a seminar again lasting an hour and a half. I was quite lucky that in my first semester I had Wednesdays and Fridays off. During this time, I could catch up on work, socialise with friends and earn extra money by working a part time job.

How much work will I have to do?
Again, workload can vary but for most degree courses you will have set readings to do. You will also have assignments to complete, sometimes these can be in the form of a presentation or a written essay. An important thing to remember is you won’t just be thrown in at the deep end your lecturers and tutors want to help so if you don’t understand something just ask.

Free time
So, when you’re not in university you will have free time. Its up to you how you spend this time. For me I like socialising with friends, I enjoy going out for meals or drinks. We also like spending time in the student’s union. The student’s union often host lots of different events. In my first year I did everything from Karaoke to quiz nights. A lot of students also choose to join a society. Joining a society is a great way to make new friends.

Money
Money was something that really worried me before starting University. But as long as you budget it really isn’t that bad. Most University students are eligible for a student loan. Student loans come in the form of a tuition fee loan and a maintenance loan. Your tuition fee loan gets paid straight to your university, so you never actually see the money, your maintenance loan on the other hand gets paid directly into your personal bank account. Maintenance loans can be used to pay for accommodation, food clothes etc. Top tip where money is concerned look into getting a student bank account. Different banks offer different perks some banks give students a free rail card whilst others may give you a cash payment.

This is just a small insight. So please feel free to ask any questions
