rejected from doing illustration at york st john in york 😭😭😭😭😭

i’m just very conflicted as york st john was the only uni i really extremely wanted to go to 💔 i’m also quite shocked that i got straight up rejected, i was so happy that i was called for an interview. 3/5 of the unis i applied for all gave me unconditional offers, with the exception of one uni which gave me a conditional offer and did not even request for my portfolio. it’s just quite jarring and sudden with the previous positive responses i got but i understand that different universities function differently and may have different expectations in the work they would like their students to produce. i’m really regretting everything sm now like i had a stack of sketches (of the type of art they probably preferred) i was planning to bring but then decided last minute not to because i didn’t like them enough & the interviewer asked if i had anymore work i could show them 😭😭 i messed up on some of the interview questions as well because i was so nervous and i have a speaking difficulty 😭😭😭😭 i dont know what to do anymore. i am very grateful and privileged that i’ve been given unconditional and conditional offers from other unis but i really didnt want to go to any of them and only applied to them as they were the only options i could’ve went to as a last resort. i just feel so dejected and useless right now 😭 i completely don’t know what to do 😭😭😭😭😭 i hope everyone else has managed to get offers in the uni they wanted to go to 😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭
Oh I don't know anything about your courses, but didn't want to read your post and run without leaving a comment. Can you take a gap year and reapply? Is there really such a difference between your ideal #1 choice and the others (there may be, so I'm not saying there isn't - I'm just curious if it's true or if there's any room for thinking differently about your offers?)

it’s okay dw about it but thank u sm for commenting 😭😭 i never really thought about a gap year but i know that my family won’t be happy about it since i’m expected to go straight to uni (especially since both of my sisters went to uni straight away). there isn’t much of a difference between my uni choices other than my comfort and accessibility - one of my choices is a uni that one of my sisters go to, and i have a weird unexplainable complex where i am extremely uncomfortable around family members/ people i already know 😭 my 2nd choice is a uni that my family would struggle to drive me there because the roads are really complicated/ annoying (?) to deal with so i don’t wanna put them through the burden of driving me there and back ;;;;;;;;; the other two unis are just not as reputable and seem to have really low standards

tbh it sounds like there isn't an ideal solution as far as your family/parents are concerned, so why not think more about having a gap year and reapplying? If you're going to upset your parents no matter what you choose to do, you could at least choose to do something that gives you some time to think about what you really want to do? Could you perhaps sell it to your parents as something that will give you experiences you can draw on in your degree, and something that will provide you with a more mature base for starting your studies? And also, something that could help you save some money towards financing your degree/life at uni?

It sounds extremely stressful for you (I read your reply and was thinking through my response). Is it possible that you have an image of York St Johns that is different from the reality of York St Johns? I'm just wondering if it would help to separate the 2 so that you are sure in your mind that the reality of going there would not match the experience you were imagining it would offer?

After that, might it help to try to plan a "line of best fit" instead of looking for a perfect solution? If you score your options out of 10, which one gets the highest mark? Then, don't dwell too much on the things that are difficult or less than ideal about that option, but explore it as a real possibility - can you attend an offer holder day, for example? If you know that it's your best option, even though it's not necessarily ticking every box for you, at least you can be sure that you're making the best of your situation and that it is a good choice (and better than staying at home for a gap year).

I hope that helps a little ... good luck.
I strongly recommend you consider a one year foundation diploma at your local FE college. This is a standard route for a lot of afts students (Oxford won't really consider you without it). The course is a great way of developing your portfolio and partcilarly in giving experience in your chosen specialism. You would then be able to re apply to York St John
Its a free course for people under 19 and details can be found here https://www.thestudentroom.co.uk/showthread.php?t=5017684

Hi eggtarteater,

So sorry to hear that you did not get an offer from us. Well done for getting an interview through as it is a very competitive course with limited spaces so you have done really well to get an interview with us!

Have you asked the academics for some feedback? This could be useful in the future and help you understand what you could improve.

I know you said that you had not thought about a gap year but it could help you decided what university you would like to go to but also allows you to reapply next year if that is something you are considering. I wouldn't worry about what your parents will think especially as both your sisters went to university straight from school. Everybody's journey to university is different and I am sure they will understand that.

I hope this has helped and good luck in your future 😊
