The Student Room Group

Do you think it's necessary for students to be well-versed in different subjects?

I have more questions in mind like this. If anyone can answer them, Please do.

What do you think is the most important thing that students should learn in school?

Are there any particular schools or universities that you feel offer the best student education?

What innovations or changes would you like to see in the education system?

Are there any other topics that you feel should be covered in secondary school courses?

Do you have any advice for people who are considering a career in education?

Most important thing: critical thinking (otherwise you won't succeed in skills).

Particular schools/universities: Oxbridge, Ivy League, the New Ivies, some of the Russell Group (Edinburgh, KCL, ICL, UCL, Manchester), specialist universities. Depends on student interest really, but they're all great in their own ways.

Innovations: Perhaps more flexibility. For example some 'undecided' degrees to allow people space to pick what they're going to study. Double degrees that take 1-2 more years. More free electives in university. So some of the stuff in the American system.
More breaks in school, like Finland system.
Less emphasis on university, more emphasis on vocational.
Broad-based admissions system at some universities for opportunity (like Switzerland unis, some like ETH Zurich are very prestigious)
Something like the SAT/GRE (aptitude test for general subjects).

Any other topics that you feel should be covered: Calculus-based physics. Perhaps not necessarily more topics, but go more in-depth with the current topics. This is to reduce the tutoring effect of A-levels.

Do you have any advice for people who are considering a career in education: Focus on pedagogy. Learn more about the pedagogy research from other countries, not just UK.
