University options

I am doing Maths, Economics and Geography at a levels I want to be a project manger as my career choice. At University I want to do Civil Engineering is it possible for me to do this course or could you suggest a course that I can do that will link with being a project manager or project planner.

Hi,

I found UCAS course search https://digital.ucas.com/search really useful when I was choosing my degree.

You could look into business studies, or similar, but I also think engineering is a good option because it's versatile. You can always specialise later on and do an MA, and you'll be able to explore your career options during your placement year.

Hope this helps, I'll see if any of the other ambassadors who study similar courses to you can offer any more specific advice.

Hi @Michael12625,

I think the first question you need to ask yourself is why you want to do Civil Engineering. Is it because you enjoy physics and maths and want to take that further, or is it because you enjoy more practical work etc. Once you can answer that question it becomes a lot clearer in what you should go ahead and study. You should enjoy and have an interest in what you're studying at university otherwise it will become a chore, and you won't have the motivation to study.

Speaking from experience I, like yourself, have always enjoyed project management and leadership roles. It's something I knew I always wanted to get into. But following from college, I knew I really enjoyed maths and physics, and I knew Engineering would provide me with a reliable industry so I went ahead with Engineering. Now I have come to applying for graduate roles and I have told every single employer that I have a keen interest in the project management.

They are more than happy to help me get to those roles! Every engineering company will have project management and if that's what you want to go into then choosing engineering would certainly not be an obstacle. You could also always do engineering with project management

I hope this helps!

I think it's worth looking if you can. Some universities may only require a Maths A-Level to go into Engineering so certainly have a look!

Hi there,

Nice to hear you have a plan for your future. Civil engineering is a great course to take and project management will be a big part in design processes. Whether it is possible to study depends on the university requirements. University of bath only requirements a strong performance in mathematics so you’re a-levels would work for this university however this may be different for others. Geography is also a good a-level for this course as civil engineering involves looking at the environment, location and climate and foundation conditions.\

Good luck with everything
