Maths and computer science at uni

Hey just reaching out to see if anyone is doing/interested in studying maths and computer science at uni.
I am in sixth form and strongly considering it so would love to talk to people feeling the same way or with experience of it
Hi.
I’m interested in doing maths and comp sci at uni too. I’m only in year 11 though so I haven’t properly decided yet. What unis are you interested in

I’m not 100% sure, I’ll probably apply for Oxford and imperial has good maths and computer science courses.
Still looking though as there’s lots out there
What have you taken for gcse? I assume computer science, if so how many girls are in your class??

My GCSEs are classics, Latin, geography and comp sci. I go to a girls school actually so they’re all girls 🤣

Hi, before applying to Oxford/Imperial I should warn you that math+computer science is by far more competitive than just maths or just computer science. Every person I know who nearly or got a place for this course in these universities would easily get a place for single courses (maths or computer science). A lot of statistics that you can find online will most likely be unrelatable to an actual situation as people applying for Mathematics and Computer Science joined course course would have grades A*A*A* or above. I know very little people who didn't have it but still managed to get an interview. Obviously that's not a reason not to apply there but be ready to get a rejection no matter how good you think you are.

Yeah ofc this is very true but I would say if you’re very good at maths and computer science don’t let that scare you off bc then you’d never get the best people in the courses. I do agree that you should be realistic w where you want to go as then you could risk not getting into any course.

Hi! I've just finished my first year of Computer Science at Heriot-Watt University and I've loved it so far. I think in general if you are drawn to puzzle solving you'll like computer science obviously there is more to it than that but the basis of liking to dissect a problem and find the best solution for it will really help you out with the coding side of the subject. For me as well I really love it as it's quite heavily coursework based which is great as exams can be a little stressful sometimes.

I also saw you asking about how many girls in classes. This changes each year of course and thankfully it generally is increasing. In my year I couldn't tell you exactly how many as it's quite a big course but I'm friends with 7 which i think is most of us. But i wouldn't let this put you off. Heriot has a women in stem society is which is really great for meeting for girls who do similar subjects to you and this society also brings in women currently working in the industry to give talks and bring insight onto what it's like for them.

If you have any questions please feel free to ask!

Hi,
Thank you for reaching out it’s so cool to be able to hear from someone who is where I am hoping to be one day!
I also see you specialise in AI which is something that has really interested me lately. Is there any books or resources you recommend? What kind of AI stuff do you do on your course and also how did you show your interest for it in your personal statement?
Sorry for all the questions just really keen about it all!

Warning (from someone who currently studies jmc at imperial): JMC at Imperial is known to be one of the toughest courses to do at Imperial… quite a few people end up switching to pure comp sci within the first few weeks of the course lol… you would have a much easier and less stressful time by going to a uni that isn’t imperial (or Oxford) lol… or you may also want to consider just pure comp sci.. the comp sci course at imperial does also involve a lot of maths but the comp sci maths exams you do will be shorter and less difficult compared to the jmc math exams (jmcs sit the same math exams as the pure maths students). I would suggest doing a lot of research about it lol, also please note that Maths at uni is totally different to maths at school lol. Also hopefully you know you’ll have to most likely do STEP 2 if you get an offer so I would start preparing for that as early as possible.

However saying all that, doing jmc at imperial is quite rewarding and you’ll be surrounded by individuals that are super bright and motivated. Also getting interviews for internships and stuff ends up being fairly easy, Imperial’s comp sci department has a huge number of connections.
