The reason schools make you choose your GCSE options in year 9 is often so they have enough time to sort out a timetable which will allow everyone (or as many students as possible) study the subjects they want to study. They have to factor-in the availability of subject teachers, of specialist class rooms, class sizes, etc.

If you're going in Year 10, then they won't have been able to take you into account, and they won't be able to restructure the whole timetable just to accommodate you. The result will be that you may have many more restrictions placed on your GCSE subject choices.

Do you know what school you will be attending? If so, I'm surprised that this conversation hasn't already happened.
